Summary

This position is in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Chillicothe VA Medical Center. The position is in the Construction & Maintenance (C&M) Shop, Facilities Management Service (FMS) and works under the direct supervision of the C&M Shop Supervisor. The primary purpose of the position involves maintaining roofs of facility buildings in good repair and a variety of masonry and maintenance work.

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Installs new roofs of all types by removing old roofs and preparing surface to accept new roofing material as slate, tile, asphalt shingles, and rubber roofing.
  • Determines roofing damage and makes necessary repairs.
  • Prepares, installs, and maintains rubber roofing.
  • Utilizes roof jacks, roof removing tools, tile cutters, and all tools of the trade.
  • Fabricates and installs flashings, roof drains, gutters, downspouts, and firewall vents.
  • Replaces sheathing, boards, and joists. Operates crane, truck, tractor, or motor vehicle when performing roofing work.
  • Performs duties of a journeyman carpenter, woodcrafter, painter, mason, cement finisher, roofer and drywall finisher which involves construction, alteration, repair, maintenance or modification of items and structures.
  • Plans and lays out masonry work involving maintenance, repair and construction on structures consisting of brick, block, or stone.
  • Plans and completes projects from initial layout to final assembly or installation.
  • Planning and layout work is difficult as instructions are most often less specific, requiring incumbent to measure accurately and to fill in the gaps on incomplete blueprints, sketches, and work requests and also because finished items are usually closely joined to other assemblies to strengthen and support or to provide air and weather-tight assemblies.
  • Repairs and modifications are complicated by the requirement to know the size, shape, and purpose of the completed structure in order to measure, cut, and fit specific items.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work is performed from ladders, scaffolding, high-ranger, and platforms. Work requires standing, reaching, bending, climbing, and stooping as dictated by the work site. Lifts, carries, and sets up materials and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. May occasionally handle material and equipment that weigh over 50 pounds. Functional requirements that may be performed on a daily, weekly, or occasional basis include:
  • Heavy lifting, 50 pounds and over.
  • Heavy carrying, 50 pounds and over.
  • Reaching above shoulder.
  • Walking, standing, crawling, kneeling, repeated bending.
  • Climbing with legs only or climbing with the use of legs and arms.
