While there is no minimum amount of training or experience required, the applicant must have had experience, military or civilian, paid or unpaid, of sufficient scope and quality to perform the duties of a Maintenance Mechanic WG-4749-10. The Maintenance Mechanic must be qualified at the journeyman level in the installation, maintenance, and operation of all building systems, including knowledge of and experience in the operation and maintenance of digital-controlled environmental systems. Technical expertise gained through experience of having actively performed in a facility composed of state-of-the-art equipment is required. Oral and written skills are required. Must be qualified to manage, coordinate, and operate a training facility where numerous demands are encountered each day. The Maintenance Mechanic must possess computer skills and be capable of inputting data into a computerized maintenance management program.
Work Conditions: Works inside in areas that are usually crowded and noisy, and outside, sometimes in bad weather. The Maintenance Mechanic is exposed to the possibility of electrical shock, cuts, bruises, and broken bones. Also works on scaffolding, high ladders, or rooftops. The Maintenance Mechanic may be required to work shift work and/or weekends. May be required to start work earlier, stay later than normal working hours, or be called back for emergencies. The Maintenance Mechanic complies with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification for handling of refrigerants and must be able to possess a valid universal license approved by the EPA, if refrigerant work is required. Hazards may require wearing full-faced pressurized breathing mask, which requires the Maintenance Mechanic to be clean-shaven. Occasionally required to wear protective clothing where there is the possibility of exposure to gunpowder, toxic refrigerant, and/or other hazardous materials. Required to operate government vehicles to travel between work sites. This position is deemed Emergency Essential in accordance with FLETC Directive 70-90. F, Hurricane Response Plan dated August 19, 2019.
Physical Demands: Continually handles objects weighing up to 10 pounds and occasionally may lift and carry items that weigh about 50 pounds. Considerable standing, stooping, and bending is required. Also works on ladders and scaffolds, which require the incumbent to work overhead or in stretched, cramped, or awkward positions.
