Summary
The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for general maintenance and repair requirements as established by the Maintenance Supervisor, Supervisory General Engineer, or Chief, Facilities Management Service, for the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital in Tampa, Florida. Work is assigned on a long-term as well as on a day-to-day basis. Employee will exercise judgement in prioritizing assignments to subordinates unless otherwise directed.
Duties
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Measuring, cutting and constructing using standard building materials.
- Independently pan and complete projects that involve constructing, altering, repairing and/or modifying framework, rafters, doors, finished paneling, windows, rough furniture, interior/exterior trim, staircases, trusses and beams.
- Operate and use a wide variety of specialty woodworking machines and tools.
- Perform work to close tolerances, exact fit and structural soundness.
- Plan, measure and lay out carpentry materials using broad knowledge of wood materials and substitutes with general and precision woodworking techniques.
- Repair plumbing systems. Installing, modifying and repairing new and existing utility, supply and disposal systems.
- Steam system troubleshooting and repair including backflow prevention valves, steam control valves, radiators and coils.

Physical Requirements: The incumbent works from ladders, scaffolding, and hydraulic platforms. He/she often works in portions of the utility systems requiring attention that are cramped, dirty and hard-to-reach locations. The work may involve prolonged crouching and standing and frequently stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in exhausting and uncomfortable positions. The incumbent frequently lifts or carries tools, equipment, ladders, scaffolding, parts and supplies up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, the incumbent will be required to lift and carry items over 50 pounds.
Working Conditions: Employee may be required to work in areas of high temperature, cold temperature, constant noise, chemical fumes, dirt, soot, rotating equipment, oil and grease. Work is performed inside and outside, sometimes in bad weather, wet cramped locations; is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises, toxic fumes, gases and acids. Assist in other crafts within the Engineering Service.Must be aware of safety hazards and know what action should be taken to avoid them. Observe all local National Safety Codes.
