Maintenance Mechanic performs a variety of duties dedicated to design, construction, and maintenance of both the interior and exterior medical center masonry and brick structures with Facilities Management. Requires a high level of knowledge of building construction techniques and skills spanning multiple trades. Maintenance Mechanic works both independently on small building maintenance projects and as part of team of specialists to perform larger new construction and renovation projects.

Duties
Maintenance Mechanic works at a journeyman level independently on most jobs with limited oral or written technical and administrative guidance or assistance from the Maintenance and Repair (M&R) Supervisor. On occasion, the incumbent will be tasked to perform duties as a member of a team under the general guidance of a Work Leader.
- Erects smoke and fire walls to NFPA specifications and constructs dust barriers to meet the OSHA regulations.
- Occasionally works in radiological areas of the hospital and installs lead lined sheet rock, glass, windows frames, doors and door frames to meet all federal regulations and site inspection from in-house physicist.
- Ensures all federal, state, and local building codes and Department of Veterans Affairs' construction and design policies and regulations are being followed. Particular attention is applied to ADA and Barrier-Free design guides.
- Reading and interpreting task orders, blueprints, sketches, and drawings, and performing material take offs for ordering parts and supplies for various size projects.
- Plans work; determines tools and techniques to use; lays tile, brick, concrete blocks, and cinder blocks for unique designs and patterns for either repair or renovation. Interior work includes floor preparation and installation of flooring ceramic flooring materials and laying out and building concrete block walls.
- Frequently uses a wide range of power tools during a typical work shift.
- Adjust, troubleshoot, repair, and install a wide variety of commercially manufactured locking devices including combination locks which are typically installed in such security units as safes, vaults, cabinets, and chests.
- Utilizes skills and techniques to lay outs rooms in accordance with drawings, sketches, or a list of requirements; install sheet rock walls and ceilings, metal studs, structural studs and wall backing sets steel frames, steel and wood doors, and windows.
- Mixes water-base and solvent paints and lacquers to color match based on material substrate, applies coatings, and properly manages waste.
- All other duties assigned in support of other trades for the benefit of the Medical Center.

Physical Requirements: The work requires frequent lifting and carrying heavy materials and parts weighing in
excess of 40 pounds with occasional lifting up to 90 pounds. Incumbent works off of scaffolding, ladders, and other raised devices. Other requirements include walking, standing, crawling, reaching, kneeling, bending, pushing and pulling. The incumbent will frequently work in uncomfortable and awkward positions. He or she will perform repetitive motions such as troweling concrete or drywall mud or rolling paint.
