Major Duties Statement
The position is a Maintenance Mechanic for the Blue Ridge Parkway. The position will serve the Sandy Flat Sub-District with the duty station located in Watauga County, North Carolina. The primary purpose of the position is to perform building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties. Incumbent is engaged in performing a variety of complex repairs, maintenance, adjustments, modifications and preventive maintenance on facilities, equipment, and system.
Area/Duty Station Information
The Blue Ridge Parkway extends 469 miles along the crest of the southern Appalachian Mountains through North Carolina and Virginia between two eastern national parks - Shenandoah and Great Smoky Mountains. For more park information, log on to: http://www.nps.gov/blri. Duty locations for these vacancies are located in the two Districts of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Blowing Rock, North Carolina - Blowing Rock and nearby Boone, North Carolina (Watauga County) are small to medium sized mountain towns with schools, stores, doctors, and the Appalachian State University available locally. Watauga County is regarded as a premier regional tourist destination and attracts visitors and seasonal residents from all over the Southeast. Many outdoor recreational opportunities are available locally including, hiking, rafting, and fishing, as well as three ski resorts. Adequate housing is available in the commuting area, at varying prices. Larger cities such as Charlotte, Winston-Salem, and Asheville are approximately 1 to 2 hours away with larger hospitals, airports, and more entertainment activities. Average winter temperatures range from 20-40 degrees with moderate snow and ice; average summer temperatures range from 60-80 degrees with high humidity.

- You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
- You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
- You will be required to obtained and maintained a Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) within 12 months of appointment.
- You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
- You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
- You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain a North Carolina C Well Water Treatment License within 12 months of appointment.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain a current NPS Working Sawyer certification within one (1) year of appointment, a NPS Working Faller certification within two (2) years of appointment and Journeyman Faller certification within three (3) years of appointment.
- Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1 year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.

This probationary period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50-100 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions. This requires standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and cramped positions.
Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment, paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks and biting insects. The incumbent's clothing may become soiled fromĀ· grease, dust, and chemicals. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of cuts, bruises, falling, bums, broken bones and chemical vapors, constant noise, rotating machinery, dust, grease, chemicals, oil, fumes and infectious blood pathogens when working in or about systems. Incumbent may also be exposed to energized circuits, electrical shock, burns, electrical rotary devices, cuts and abrasions from the use of tools and equipment and bums from chemicals. The incumbent is required to wear prescribed safety equipment and to adhere to safety rules and regulations, and standards as set by OSHA and the Park's established Safety Plan. Snowmobile operation is occasionally required for winter operations at some park locations.
Documentation for the Land Management Workforce Flexibility Act (LMWFA) eligibility, submission of ALL SF-50s and performance information for each period of temporary/term employment that qualifies for LMWFA. Performance documentation can be obtained by contacting the supervisors for the positions you served in during your 24 months. If they did not complete performance appraisals ask them to provide a statement of performance for each period of service. The statement must specify the dates for each employment period and your level of performance (dates should match the dates on the SF-50s).
