Conditions of employment
- Work requires contact with inmates convicted of offenses against the punitive articles of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
- Inmate contact exposes the incumbent to stress and the threat of potentially dangerous situations such as physical attack or riots by the inmate population.
- This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- This position is subject to emergency call - 24 hours per day, 7 days a week - to perform emergency repairs during off-duty hours.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- This position requires the employee to possess or obtain (within 1 year of employment) and maintain an Environmental Protection Act (EPA) Universal certificate in the transition and recovery of refrigerants.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- IAW The Prison Rape Elimination Act, the MCC may not hire or promote anyone who may have contact with inmates, has engaged in sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup community conferment facility, juvenile facility, or other institution.
- The incumbent of this position will comply with all provisions of the 15th MP BDE Regulation 190-3, Rules of Conduct and ACC Policy Letter #17, Standards of Conduct.
- This position requires the employee to complete the Army Corrections Command Pre-Service Training program to maintain security and control of inmates, appropriate staff/inmate interaction and understanding the rules of inmate conduct.
- Personnel who enter the Military Corrections Complex (within or outside the fence line) consent to inspection of their person and property, including their vehicle.
- Department of Defense Instruction, Number 1325.7 states all confinement facility personnel shall possess a high degree of maturity and emotional stability.

- All Army Corrections Command employees are required to take 40 hours of training annually. Employees will receive basic training in inmate supervision and security as well as specialized training in their field.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- The position requires the completion of a pre-employment screening of tuberculosis and an annual screening thereafter.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
- This position requires the employee to pass a Criminal History Background Check. Candidates under consideration will be required to certify whether they have ever been convicted of such an offense.

Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Mechanic Leader ~ without more than normal supervision. - Maintain and repair refrigeration systems (i.e. walk-in coolers, freezers, drinking water coolers and ice machines); commercial and industrial Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems (including mechanical and electrical control valves, performing exhaust analysis and adjusting firing controls and fuel air mixtures). Repair and maintain plumbing systems (hot and cold water piping and hot water circulating systems, traps, showers, tubs, water closets and garbage disposals) and measuring, cutting, bending and joining pipes. Test, troubleshoot, and modify electronics equipment with integral components. Install, repair and maintain electrical wiring systems, switches, distribution panels, outlet boxes and electrical fixtures and emergency power supply systems. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
Physical Effort: The incumbent of this position works in close and cramped positions, lifting, climbing, stooping, crawling, and bending. They frequently lift and carry items, unassisted, weighing up to 50 pounds, and often exert similar effort in pushing, pulling, and positioning parts, assemblies, and equipment. They frequently lift and move heavier items with the assistance of other workers or with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes. They are sometimes required to work from ladders or work platforms at varying heights.
Working Conditions: Work in this position is both inside and outside in all kinds of weather. When inside, they are frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and noise which is difficult to talk above. When outside, they sometimes work in bad weather, in mud or snow, and in wet or icy areas. Both inside and outside, workers are exposed to irritations and discomfort from dust, dirt, noise, grease, heat, and fumes. They typically work on parts and systems, which are dirty, oily or greasy. They are subject to cuts, burns and explosives, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and injuries from falls while repairing, positioning, and moving equipment.
This position is located within the Military Correctional Complex, located at the United States Disciplinary Barracks. This position requires frequent, direct contact with inmates.
This position has been designated as a primary/rigorous and is eligible for Law Enforcement (LEO) retirement coverage under the provisions of title 5 USC 8336(c) and 8412(d) by DoD memorandum dated 19 August 2010. The maximum entry age for positions covered under this retirement is 37 years old. Retirement from this position is mandatory at age 57 with 20 years of LEO service. The maximum entry age may be waived under certain circumstances. Individuals who are past the maximum entry age limit, but previously served in a primary position, MAY be reinstated.
