Summary

This position is part of the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute, Bureau of Indian Education (BIE). As a Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor you will be responsible for supervising and coordinating the execution of maintenance, repairs, improvements, quality control, and safety including health and environmental safety for all campus buildings.

Duties

As a Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor WS-4749-9, your typical work assignments may include the following:

  • Supervise and train subordinate workers in various trades and crafts equipment, facilities, and materials in an organizational segment or group.
  • Plan on a weekly or monthly basis the use of subordinate workers including evaluating, training and assigning work in various phases associated with the construction, repair, maintenance, and renovation of buildings and related structures, grounds, fixtures and utilities, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices.
  • Establish and maintain a preventive maintenance program for the college campus, anticipating maintenance and repair needs far enough in advance to procure supplies to assure orderly workflow.
  • Recommend performance ratings, training, disciplinary actions, approves/denies leaves, and recommends employees for promotions and reassignments.
  • Ensure education in, compliance with, and practice of safety procedures, OSHA requirements, and environmental issues in all work areas.
  • Facilitate, implement, and administer construction and service contracts as contracting officer representative for all campus buildings & equipment as assigned.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what the applicant can do against what the work calls for. The knowledge, skills, and abilities of applicants are compared with the knowledge, skills, and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Maintenance Worker Supervisors must be able to lead other workers or supervise subordinates, to deal objectively and harmoniously with others, and to render sound decisions. This position involves working independently in a wide range of maintenance activities, ensure maintenance and/or facility operations are carried out in accordance with appropriate policies and procedures and supervising maintenance department employees which includes assigning work to subordinate staff, plan and distribute workload, inspect work in progress, train or instruct subordinate staff, and initiate personnel actions, such as hiring employees, providing performance ratings, and addressing poor performance or misconduct.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTORS: In addition to the specialized experience applicant must possess the additional knowledge, skills, and abilities requirements. The Selective Placement Factor represents a requirement for this position (screen-out) and is a prerequisite for appointment.
  • Applicants must possess current state journeyman level licensure in at least one of the following trade disciplines: Electrical, HVAC, Mechanical or Plumbing and/or current state licensure as a mechanical contractor or commercial contractor.

Only experience and education obtained by the closing date of this announcement will be considered.
