Duties

This position is a multi-skilled maintenance mechanic responsible for performing journeyman-level work in HVAC/refrigeration, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry, while performing apprentice-level work in other trades as needed. The incumbent independently installs, maintains, repairs, troubleshoots, and modifies facility systems and equipment to ensure operational readiness.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Performing preventive maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting on HVAC and refrigeration systems, including environmental control systems, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic components.
  • Installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems, generators, lighting, motors, pumps, distribution panels, and related equipment while diagnosing electrical malfunctions.
  • Performing journeyman-level plumbing work, including installing and repairing water, sewage, oil, and gas distribution systems, fixtures, and drainage systems.
  • Completing carpentry and structural repairs to shelters, containers, floors, walls, ceilings, and related facilities, including fabrication and modification of wood and metal components.
  • Repairing and modifying structural and body components using technical manuals, blueprints, and engineering specifications.
  • Operating and performing minor maintenance on material handling equipment, service vehicles, snow removal equipment, and aerial lifts.
  • Conducting inspections, testing, fabrication, and design modifications to support facility and equipment readiness.
  • Following technical manuals, engineering drawings, and maintenance standards to complete assignments safely and efficiently.
  • Performing other related maintenance duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Extensive knowledge of HVAC/refrigeration, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and general maintenance principles.
  • Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and calibrate complex environmental control and electrical systems.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematics, engineering drawings, and technical manuals.
  • Proficiency in using specialized testing equipment, power tools, and trade-specific hand tools.
  • Knowledge of fabrication techniques, construction methods, shop mathematics, and repair procedures for wood, metal, and structural components.
  • Ability to operate and obtain licenses for material handling equipment, service vehicles, snow removal equipment, forklifts, and aerial lifts.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to independently plan, prioritize, and complete maintenance assignments.

Responsibility:

Responsible for supervising workers directly in accomplishing the work. Establishes deadlines, priorities, and work sequences, and plans work assignments based on general work schedules, methods, and policies set by higher-level supervisors. Participates with their supervisors in the initial planning of current and future work schedules, budget requests, staffing needs, estimates and recommendations as to current and future work. Plans and establishes leave schedule, determines training needs, makes formal appraisals of subordinate work performance, and recommends promotion or reassignment of subordinates. Coordinates work with supporting or related work functions controlled by other supervisors.

PHYSICAL EFFORT

Lifts objects from moderate to heavy weights (Maximum weight of 50 lbs., anything over 50 lbs. will have assistance), climbs ladders, scaffolds, and work from platforms. May work in cramped and awkward positions, reaches, bends, lifts while using tools, parts, and/or equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work inside and outside in a variety of weather conditions. Subject to exposure to dust and dirt, grease, fumes, noise, etc. Workers are also subject to cuts, burns, bruises, electrical shocks, etc. Safety equipment is provided to minimize hazards.

OTHER:  This position is mission essential.  May be required to work when the rest of the Base is closed or arrive on duty early and/or stay on duty after normal working hours to initiate maintenance repairs, remove snow, ice, etc.
