Duties
This position works in the Maintenance Section and serves as a Working Leader of three or more
employees located in the Veterans Administration Medical Center Louisville, Kentucky. The purpose of the position is to perform repairs, rebuilding, retrofitting, and maintaining a variety of multi-function building infrastructure equipment by using a preventive maintenance program (PM) of facilities structure, assigned utility systems, and non-medical equipment. Incumbent is also responsible for new equipment and utility installations as assigned.
- Assigns the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the work group.
- Maintains current knowledge on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives; for example, technical orders and the Automated Engineering Management System and Medical Equipment Reporting System (AMS/MERS).
- Supervises and/or performs inspections 20% of the time, and repair, maintenance, installation, relocation, and trouble shooting of building infrastructure systems 80% of the time.
- Insures that needed plans, blueprints, materials, and tools are available, and that needed
stock is obtained from appropriate supply locations.
- Maintains, installs, hooks up, and put into operation all types of mechanical equipment and systems, pumps, and piping systems, electric and pneumatic controls for offices, conference rooms, food preparation/canteen areas and store, laboratories, dental areas, operating rooms, emergency rooms, and special exam areas.
- Reads blueprints, and makes simple drawings and sketches of a considerable variety and
makes cost estimates of any changes, alterations, improvements or additions to planned work.
- Provides fellow workers with proper tools to accomplish assigned tasks, purchases new
tools as needed, co-ordinates work scheduling with other Eng. shop supervisors on work requiring multi-disciplined efforts to complete.
- Assigns priority of work orders, PM work orders, oral or written instructions, and ensures that deadlines are met with proper PM scheduling and work order review.

Physical Requirements: Work is performed in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. There is frequent standing, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching; or working on top of, under,
and in tight compartments or cramped or awkward positions. Performs strenuous work while
standing, lying, or sitting. Frequently lifts and carries items, unassisted, weighing up to 60 pounds; and often exerts similar effort in pushing, pulling, and positioning parts, assemblies, and equipment. Frequently lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of other workers or with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes. May be required to work from ladders or work platforms at varying heights.
