Summary

This position is a Maintenance Worker, WG- 4749-6 working in Los Banos, California for the R8-San Luis National Wildlife Refuge Complex.

This is a term position expected to last 13 MONTHS but may be extended up to a total of 4 years at management's discretion.

Duties

As a Maintenance Worker your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assist with repairs that can be accomplished by removing, cleaning, replacing, packing, and sealing defective parts of utility, supply, and disposal systems such as dirty traps, sections of broken pipe, faucets and leaky drains. Measure, cut, bend, and thread pipe and tile, and caulk and seal elbows, union joints, tile pipe, faucets, and shower drains.
  • Mix, pour, spread, and level cement and concrete surfaces for structures, sidewalks, steps, walls, curbs, ramps, and roads.
  • Measure, cut, construct, install and repair wood products where the finished appearance of work products is not the primary consideration.
  • Assist in preventive and corrective maintenance on traditional and alternative (e.g. wind, solar, geothermal) heating, refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
  • Operate farm-type tractors and towed or attached equipment to maintain grounds, dikes, canals, levees, marshes, fire maintenance/prevention, and road medians or perform farming functions.
  • Operate and perform operator maintenance on one or more motor vehicles including platform trucks, van trucks, stake trucks, dump trucks, passenger shuttle vans, and cargo vans. Repair by replacing, adjusting, or cleaning defective limited external combustion parts or components.
  • Keep written maintenance records for all equipment operated. Keeps equipment log books up-to-date at all times.

Although no specific amount of experience, education or training is required, applicants must meet a minimum level of ability in relation to the position and the Assessment Questionnaire in order to be rated qualified for consideration. To be qualified candidates must meet any screen out element(s) listed at an "acceptable" level, and must achieve an average rating of at least "acceptable" on all of the elements. Only education, training, or experience acquired before the closing date will be considered.

ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF A MAINTENANCE WORKER WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION. At the WG-06 level, the Maintenance Worker is expected to assist higher graded Maintenance personnel in performing common and typical tasks related to a variety of trades. Examples of duties which are common and typical include: 1) performing a variety of trades such as automotive/equipment repair, welding, carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing; 2) maintaining station grounds using mowers, weed eaters, farm-type tractors with attachments and herbicides; 3) maintaining restrooms, roads, parking areas, boat ramps, etc., 3) aid in installation/repair of cabinets, fences, siding, etc.; 4) assist in mixing and pouring cement; 5) operate gasoline and diesel vehicles; and 6) wash and fuel vehicles and equipment.
