Duties
1. Operates a variety of equipment and tools in support of FSS Outdoor Maintenance team. Inspects facilities, and equipment; performs routine preventive maintenance and minor and general repair to buildings and equipment. Maintains adequate stock levels of materials/supplies necessary to perform repairs. Repairs and installs sprinkler systems. Replaces parts such as sprinkler heads, PVC pipes, valves, and controllers on sprinkler runs around buildings. Prepares areas for painting by repairing holes, applying drywall compound, and sanding; applies paint, enamel, varnishes as undercoats and finish coats where needed. Repairs furnishings using glue products, nails, screws, and proper clamp devices. Installs and/or repairs such items as curtain rods, towel rods, locks, and hasps as required. Hangs pictures, installs wall shelves/furnishing items mounted in cement block walls, using anchors or masonry nails. Replaces molding, doors, windows, trim, etc. as required. Performs maintenance of buildings and other facilities to include adjustment to landscaping, timber, doors, furnishings and appliances. Determines tools/equipment needed to carry out work duties. Operates equipment to include but not limited to the following: four wheel, rubber tire tractor with eight and twelve forward gears, two to four reverse gears with vacuum brakes and gross weight of 8,640 pounds with the following attachments: whirlwind mower, gang lawn mower, seeder, harrow, sickle bar, fertilizer spreader, rotary, sweeper, tow trailer, curbing edger, disc, tow sweeper, up to 10k All Terrain Fork lift. Deliver/setup bleachers, maneuver/position stage/trailers, and chairs for base wide events.
2. Replaces light bulbs, using ladder and/or step stool to reach high areas. Checks electrical receptacles; replaces switch plates/covers when required; resets circuit breakers; notifies supervisor, who contacts Civil Engineering (CE) or company when repair cannot be accomplished. Runs hand lawnmowers or domestic type powered lawnmowers, sidewalk edgers to edge sidewalks, headwall curbs, clears small trees and bushes using handsaw, hatchet or clipper. Operates weedeater for trimming ditches and fence rows. Contacts supervisor when problems cannot be resolved.
3. Performs minor maintenance on lawn mowing and trimming equipment, pressure washers and other like maintenance and cleaning equipment. Provides training to staff on proper and safe use of equipment. Using a shovel, digs ditches and trenches. Cleans weeds and grass from ditches and headwalls; rakes pine straw, leaves, and pine burrs.
4. Moves furniture/equipment from warehouse and/or delivery vehicles as required; provides same service during turn-in of old furnishings. Sets up and dismantles furnishings when received, sold, or turned in as excess; tasks involve setting up, packing and unpacking furnishings/equipment and like items. Transports condemned and no longer used items to Defense Reutilization Management Office (DRMO) or other agencies as appropriate; palletizes equipment as required to expedite turn-in actions.
5. Operates high-pressure equipment for spraying water/steam in cleaning exterior of buildings. Operates watering systems; prunes hedges; polices and cleans grounds, facilities, and parking lots. Inspects and corrects grounds and garden areas for discrepancies such as presence of weeds, fungus growth, infestation of pests, etc., drainage problems; reports damage to supervisor. Mows with push and riding mowers, sews seeds and waters/fertilizes as needed.
6. Performs other related duties as assigned.
OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTS:
1. Skill and Knowledge: Requires skill in the use of common hand tools, small power tools and equipment, and in measuring and aligning items to be installed. Knowledge and ability to perform minor plumbing, carpentry, painting and electrical. 2. Physical Effort: Moderate to heavy lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds; and occasionally heavier objects with the use of a dolly and/or buddy method. Active walking, standing, bending and occasionally working in cramped, awkward positions. 3. Working Conditions: Works inside and outside in dirty, dusty, greasy conditions. Sometimes exposed to fumes and/or disagreeable odors. Exposed to moderate to high noise levels from operating power equipment. Subject to cuts and abrasions from use of power and hand tools. Chance of serious injury (e.g., broken bones, severe cuts, strained back).
