Summary

You will serve as a Maintenance Worker

This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition at management's discretion.

$27.42 Per Hour (Step 01) to $31.99 Per Hours (Step 05). First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the step 1 rate.

Clarification from the agency

This position is being filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority and is open to U.S. citizens and nationals who meet all eligibility requirements, including permanent and exclusive residency within the defined vicinity of the field unit as described in this announcement. Duties

Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following:

Performs basic regular preventative maintenance tasks independently (changing filters, inspection and testing of control valves/dampers, adjusting building automation control parameters)
Assists in minor repairs and maintenance of ventilation fans, boilers and chiller equipment
Operates and maintains water and wastewater treatment plant systems. Collects water samples in accordance with proper procedures for sample collections as part of facility water and waste water permits
Responds to faults in facility operating systems when notified by automated management system during normal business hours and after-hours as part of an after-hours on-call rotation system
Performs general grounds maintenance and grounds upkeep, including summer lawn maintenance and winter snow removal
Performs minor electrical repairs, including troubleshooting basic electrical circuits, replace light switches, light fixtures and circuit breakers
Performs basic plumbing repairs, including replacing faucet and toilet water valves, identifying and repairing water leaks, and maintaining facility water softener systems
Performs general maintenance including painting and light carpentry as needed

You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements: possess a valid State license, and possess a safe driving record. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
Pre-Employment Medical - Taking and passing a pre-employment medical examination at Federal expense is required due to the physical demands of this job.

As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1 year trial period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.

This trial period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. There is no specific length of training or experience required; however, applicants must be able to demonstrate the ability to perform the basic work of the position without more than normal supervision through experience shown in the written resume and responses to the job-related task statements in this announcement.
To be basically qualified for this position applicants must meet the identified screen-out element below. Screen-Out Element: The Maintenance Mechanic performs a variety of tasks involved in the upkeep of buildings, grounds, and related structures, fixtures, and utilities, (e.g., plumbing, electrical, or industrial machinery) and related equipment.

Additional information

This position will be filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority. Eligibility is limited to applicants who reside within the defined local commuting area at the time of application. For this announcement, the local commuting area is the area from which individuals can reasonably commute to the duty station under normal conditions. The defined vicinity for this position is: 75 miles from La Crosse, WI. You must provide proof of residency within the defined vicinity (e.g. mortgage or property deed, lease/rental agreement, utility bill, insurance policy, etc.). Physical Demands: Work requires frequent work in tiring or uncomfortable positions with very heavy physical effort in performing such tasks as frequently lifting and moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds (unassisted), prolonged standing, walking, bending, kneeling; moving hands, arms, feet,and legs; and climbing are involved. Danger of falling on slippery surfaces and/or high ladders.

Working Conditions: The position necessitates both inside and outside work and exposure to all kinds of weather. The worker is exposed to noise, vibrations, dust, dirt, water, and odors may be subject to cuts and/or burns. Worker is subject to danger of falling when working on roofs and from scaffolds and ladders.
