Summary

You will serve as a Maintenance Worker.

This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition at management's discretion.

$27.71 Per Hour (Step 01) to $32.32 Per Hours (Step 05). First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the step 1 rate.

This position is being filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority and is open to U.S. Citizens and Nationals who meet all eligibility requirements, including permanent and exclusive residency within the defined vicinity of the field unit as described in this announcement. Duties

Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following:

Conducts work to maintain and operate HVAC/R systems.
Conducts work to maintain and operate lab support systems.
Operates & performs required preventative maintenance on such equipment as HVAC systems, steam boilers, hot water boilers, incinerators, water hillers, walk-in freezers, diesel- powered electrical generators, HEPA-filtered air exhaust systems, sterilizers, and others
Installs, modifies, repairs, & tests new & existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, fixtures, controls, and equipment. Locates & diagnoses trouble occurring in all electrical & control systems and makes all required repairs.

Condition of Employment- During on-call rotation, must be within 90 minutes response time to the Center for building emergencies.

You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Pre-Employment Medical - Taking and passing a pre-employment medical examination at Federal expense is required due to the physical demands of this job.

As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1 year trial period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.

This trial period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. There is no specific length of training or experience required; however, applicants must be able to demonstrate the ability to perform the basic work of the position without more than normal supervision through experience shown in the written resume and responses to the job-related task statements in this announcement. To be basically qualified for this position applicants must meet the identified screen-out element below.
Screen-Out Element: The Maintenance Worker provides entry-level job duties in functions needed for repair of various equipment that is mechanical, electrical, or plumbing in nature.

Additional information

This position will be filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority. Eligibility is limited to applicants who reside within the defined local commuting area at the time of application. For this announcement, the local commuting area is the area from which individuals can reasonably commute to the duty station under normal conditions. The defined vicinity for this position is: 75 miles from Madison, WI. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service. Physical Demands: Work requires heavy physical exertion to manually carry, move, or lift objects and materials weighing up to 50 pounds (unassisted); prolonged standing, walking, bending, climbing; crawling, kneeling, stooping, turning and reaching, potentially in tight areas; moving arms, hands, feet, and legs and working in tiring or uncomfortable positions. May work from ladders and scaffolds requiring balance and climbing ability. Incumbent is under a strain required by bending, reaching, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs, and by the vibrations and jerking of equipment. Work is performed in crowded and noisy environments around dust, fumes, and odors.

Working Conditions: The work is performed indoors and outdoors. Indoor work may expose the employee to work areas which can be bad-smelling, dirty, greasy, noisy, or smoky. Outdoor work may expose the employee to numerous weather conditions including extreme cold, heat, rain, or snow. Potential serious injury may result from mishandling equipment/tools or from performance of strenuous work-assignments. Protective clothing, eyewear, gloves, and safety shoes may be required for safe performance of duties when working with caustic cleaning agents, pesticides, machinery, and power equipment.
