Summary

This position provides assistance to the Journeymen craftsmen in Chinle Service Unit. The purpose of this position is to assist in the accomplishment of the Facilities Management program by programing carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, heating, and other related maintenance and repair work.

A REAL ID will be required beginning May 7, 2025, in accordance with 6 C.F.R. 37.5 (2021).

Duties

  • Installs and repairs electrical components and existing circuits in using established layouts, wiring diagrams, and standard trade practices.
  • Performs surface preparation and painting by cleaning, scraping, sanding, patching, priming, and applying finish coats to buildings, structures, and equipment.
  • Performs carpentry maintenance and repairs by constructing, installing, modifying, and repairing minor structures, including framing, partitions, shelving, doors, windows, and trim.
  • Performs electrical maintenance and repairs on existing wiring, fixtures, controls, and related equipment by replacing defective components, making connections, and completing repairs using established safety practices.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance and minor repairs on HVAC, refrigeration, air conditioning equipment, and related facility systems.
  • Performs routine plumbing maintenance and repairs on facility systems and components.

Background Investigation Requirement:
This position requires the successful completion of a federal background investigation as a condition of employment.

A background investigation is a standard process used by the Federal Government to verify an individual's identity, employment history, education, and other relevant information to determine suitability for Federal service.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates for this position will be evaluated under the Federal Wage System (FWS) Job Grading Standards. Applicants will be rated in the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position. Each of the job elements must be addressed on the on-line assessment questionnaire in order for the applicant to be rated for the position.

Shift Work: The incumbent may be required to work on rotating shifts, both on weekdays and weekends, to provide necessary coverage. He is required as an incidental duty to operate government owned or leased vehicles in the performance of assigned duties.

Subject to callback after normal duty hours in the event of emergencies related to building, utilities and equipment failure of the hospital, field clinic, or living quarters. Work involved in these emergency situations may be in the trades of electrical, plumbing, heating or air conditioning.

Physical effort is expended in continually standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in small or cramped quarters. Frequently carries, lifts, pulls or pushes carts and equipment weighing up to and beyond 50 pounds. Work is sometimes performed on ladders and/or scaffolds, which requires employee to work overhead or in stretched, cramped or awkward positions. Work is performed inside and outside in all kinds of weather and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. Incumbent may perform work where bad smelling fumes are present. Incumbent has frequent exposure to broken bones.

Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.

This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.
