Summary

About the Position: Assignment in connection with the maintenance and operation of navigation channels with USACE Wilmington Operations District, Navigation Branch, Plant Section in Wilmington NC.

Duties

  • Operate outboard vessel to transport personnel, material, and supplies.
  • Perform proper care and maintenance, of various vessel equipment and components.
  • Perform deckhand duties associated with a multipurpose vessel.
  • Serve as Signal operator for crane operations.
  • Serves as assistant / helper to the crane operator.
  • Perform carpentry work in constructing, maintaining, and replacing a variety of structures in or around navigable waters.
  • Assist with welding, mechanic work, flame cutting, and construction repair and replacement.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid drivers license.
  • Must obtain a certification as a crane operator within 6 months of employment.
  • Employee may be required to live aboard vessel assigned.
  • Tour of duty work rotation: may be 7 days on, 7 days off, 12 hours per day; 8 days on, 6 days off, 10 hours per day or 4 days on, 3 days off, 10 hours per day; 14 days on, 14 days off, 12 hours per day.
  • Random drug and alcohol testing under the Department of Army Drug-Free Workplace Program.
  • Pre-employment and periodic physical examination to validate ability to lift 50 pounds and/or evaluation under the District Medical Surveillance Program.
  • Personal Protective Clothing or equipment.
  • Must obtain and maintain a US government passport within 6 months of employment.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Worker (Dual Rate) without more than normal supervision. Operate a 140-ton hydraulic crane, use and maintenance of hydraulic power units and marine construction. I am skilled in basic metal welding and watercraft maintenance and repair. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT:
    Work may often require the incumbent to climb and work in high places, or in confined areas belowwater level. Work would frequently require considerable lifting and carrying of materials or objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Frequent standing, bending, walking, and kneeling are required. Safe work practices are an integral part of this position. Incumbent is required to know, comply with, and promote prescribed safety rules and regulations.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS:
    Work is performed inside and outside, aboard floating plant, suspended from harnesses, and wading along shorelines. During the performance of duties, incumbent is subject to the hazards of extremeheat and cold, drowning, contact with poisonous reptiles and plants, insect bites, slipping, falling objects, swinging loads, eye injuries from clipping paint and rust, and infection from cuts, bruises, abrasions, etc.
