Duties
Major duties include, but are not limited to:
- Assists higher graded shop personnel in general maintenance and repair.
- Assists with preventative maintenance, and the maintenance and repair of facilities and equipment.
- Assures safety requirements and housekeeping rules are followed.
- Operates power saws, grinders, pipe threaders, drills etc. for repair or installation of equipment.
- Repairs and installs equipment as instructed by a journeyman.
- Works as part of a multidisciplinary team of maintenance personnel.
- Executes a wide variety of work outside of one particular trade.
- Uses common tools to complete work, such as tapes and rulers.
- Inspects used parts, equipment, and systems.
- Handles conflicts and problems according to established policies and procedures.
- Protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with regulations and applicable laws.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Promotion Potential: This position is for WG-5. There is no promotion potential for this position.
Work Schedule: Full-Time, Monday-Friday, 12 hour rotating shifts

Duty Station: Jefferson Barracks Division; however, the duty station may be changed to one of multiple locations within the VA St. Louis Health Care System based on the needs of the facility.
Physical Requirements: Considerable standing, stooping, and bending is required. Climbing and working from ladders and scaffolds in stretched, cramped, or awkward positions is necessary. Using a hammer and other hand tools necessitates considerable arm and hand movement and dexterity. Items up to 50 pounds are lifted and carried. Items over 50 pounds are infrequently carried or others assist in movement.
Working Conditions: Works long, rotating shifts. Works both inside and outside. When inside, frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and noise. When outside, is exposed to bad weather, works in mud, and in wet or icy areas. Exposed to irritations and discomfort from dust, grease, heat, and fumes. Typically inspects parts, equipment, and systems, which are dirty, oily, or greasy. Subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and injuries from falls while positioning and moving equipment. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as protective hearing devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves, and protective clothing. Some safety equipment may be hot and uncomfortable and will be worn for long periods of time.
