Summary
This position is located in the Maintenance Shop of the Facilities Section within Engineering Service and is under the direct supervision of the Facilities Section Maintenance Supervisor with work subject to review for quality, timeliness, completeness and adherence to policies, priorities, project, schedules, and detailed work plans.
Duties
The principal duties of this position are to be an "area maintenance helper" meaning the incumbent will be responsible for non-journeyman level tasks within specific zones of the Medical Center. The responsibilities will include but is not limited to:
- Replacing ceiling tiles, touch-up painting of rooms and doors, repairing leaking faucets
- Performing small plumbing repairs such as unplugging drains using snakes and plungers, and supporting the construction crew.
- Replacing all missing or burned out lights, incandescent and fluorescent.
- Replacing floor base molding and corner molding and replace missing or broken floor tiles.
- Moving furniture and supplies, cleaning mechanical and electrical spaces.
- Assist journeyman Mechanics, Plumbers, Electricians Carpenters and craftsman etc., within the aspect of their duties.
- May also be Engineering's representative in associated areas and may have daily contact with the staff in those areas.
- Make daily contact with the "customers" in their zone and make sure their requests are followed up, by either performing the job themselves or submitting a work order to Engineering for follow up by the shops.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Promotion Potential: This position is for WG-5. There is no promotion potential for this position.
Work Schedule: Full Time, Multiple Work Schedules, Schedule will be based on the facility's needs. Shift is subject to change and may include Weekends and Holidays

Physical Requirements: The maintenance helper frequently handles objects weighing 50 pounds and occasionally will carry objects weighing more than 50 pounds for considerable distances. He/she will be required to push, pull, reach, walk, crawl, kneel, bend and work in cramped positions over and under machinery of all types for sustained periods of time. He/she must use proper lifting and transporting techniques when working with heavy loads.
Working Conditions: The maintenance helper will be required to work indoors as well as outdoors. Indoor work will usually be well lighted and ventilated. Occasionally, the job site may be unventilated hot and or cold, or poorly lit. Dirt, grease, and dampness are frequently encountered and floors are sometimes uneven, oily and slippery. He/she is frequently exposed to moving objects and sharp edges with the possibility of cuts and bruises and to noise and vibration from machines. Frequently he/she will climb ladders and work from high places. Outside work is performed in all types of weather conditions.
