Summary

As Maintenance Worker Leader, you will provide instruction and direction to employees working on maintenance projects covering a variety of trades at the Mount Rushmore National Memorial.

Duties

  • Assign daily tasks to work group team members and ensure necessary plans and supplies are available as needed
  • Demonstrate proper, safe work methods and check on work in progress and upon completion to ensure supervisor's instructions are being followed and deadlines will be met
  • Repair buildings and quarters by constructing, installing, and replacing items like doors, shelves, windows, trim, and cabinets
  • Apply premixed paints and stains to coat a variety of internal and external surfaces
  • Patch and repair roofs
  • Repair and replace plumbing fixtures, pipes, and lines
  • Perform simple electrical tasks like replacing defective wiring and fixtures
  • Operate a variety of motor vehicles to remove snow and transport materials; perform operator maintenance on those vehicles
  • Perform custodial duties, such as cleaning buildings and comfort stations, emptying trash, and waxing floors

Qualifications

In order to be qualified for this position, you must possess the ability to lead other tradespeople in carrying out a variety of maintenance and construction duties. You must have provided instruction to others in the technical aspects of work in the electrical, carpentry, and plumbing fields and have reviewed the work in progress to ensure it complies with plans and trade standards. You must be able to independently complete maintenance projects, such as building decking and installing electrical or plumbing fixtures.

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will be paid if the person selected for the position is from outside the local commuting area and is otherwise eligible for reimbursement of relocation expenses under the Federal Travel Regulations (such as current permanent Federal employees).

Physical Effort: Works from ladders, scaffolds and platforms. Where surfaces are to be coated, or the parts of systems worked on are hard to reach requiring incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions: The work is done inside and outside where dirt, spray, fumes is present. Also required to work in extreme weather conditions and/or wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable. Frequently exposed to the potential risk of broken bones, shock, burns, cuts and bruises.
