Summary

You will serve as a Maintenance Worker Supervisor with the National Park Service.

This permanent position is located in Pinnacles National Park, in the Division of Maintenance, Branch of Roads, Trails, and Transportation.

Duties

Reports directly to Chief of Maintenance GS-1640-12 and supervises the roads and trails program in two separate districts of the park (East and West), oversees the alternative transportation program (park shuttle) and serves as the park's fleet manager.

  • Oversees the day to day work of the permanent, seasonal, and volunteer employees of the Roads, Trails, and Transportation branch.
  • Prepares work plans, budgets, special projects, and staffing requirements on an annual basis for the roads, trails, and transportation branch.
  • Utilizes computerized facility management programs; to inventory, assess, and program maintenance work for park roads and trails, and to develop project proposals.
  • Serves as an Agreements Technical Representative (ATR) for cooperative agreements and as a Contracting Officers Representative (COR).
  • Actively promotes the park safety program and requires that safe working practices and conditions are maintained.
The position of Maintenance Worker Supervisor requires both indoor office work that is mostly sedentary and outside field work in a variety of temperatures and weather conditions. This position requires the ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, crawl, climb stairs and ladders and perform a degree of physical effort in lifting and carrying moderate loads up to fifty pounds.

Travel, transportation & relocation expenses will not be paid. Relocation expenses will be the employee's responsibility.


Pinnacles National Park is located in California's Central Coast region of the Gabilan Mountain Range east of the Salinas Valley. The park's 27,000 acres, with over 16,000 acres of designated wilderness, has at its core rock formations of an ancient volcanic field that originated 200 miles southeast as it crept along the San Andreas Fault over the past 23 million years. The surrounding landscape is largely chaparral with areas of oak grasslands. Beyond the boundaries are working landscapes for ranching and agricultural operations that still support this rural part of California and uphold dark night skies. Elevations range from 824 to 3304 feet, and temperature extremes range from 15 degrees in winter to over 110 degrees in summer. The position is located at the eastside park headquarters in Paicines, CA. Nearest communities for shopping, doctors, hospitals, and other amenities are Hollister (40 miles, population 34,400), King City (40 miles, population 11,000), Gilroy (65 miles, population 41,400), Salinas (70 miles, population 151,000), and Monterey (90 miles, population 30,000). Physical Demands: This position is required to perform work both inside and outside, with most work performed indoors and sedentary in nature. The incumbent also works in rain, mud, snow, and in hot and cold temperatures ranging from 0 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit and is frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from noise, vibration, dust, dirt, fumes, exhaust, oils, heat, cold, and dampness. Due to the extreme environments encountered on remote trails and roads, there is significant danger of tipping. The incumbent is frequently subjected to the possibility of receiving cuts, abrasions, bruises, and strains while servicing and operating equipment. When working inside, the incumbent must ensure proper ventilation. The incumbent is required to follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment such as protective hearing devices and hard hats. The work involves regular and recurring exposure to moderate risks and discomforts associated with the operation, repair, and maintenance of park infrastructure and equipment. There are frequent occasions of exposure to risk situations.
