Clarification from the agency

This position is being filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority and is open to U.S. citizens and nationals who meet all eligibility requirements, including permanent and exclusive residency within the defined vicinity of the field unit as described in this announcement. Under this authority, veterans' preference and traditional rating and ranking procedures do not apply.

Duties

This position is located within the Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Pacific West Region, Olympic National Park in Port Angeles, Washington. The major duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

Build, repair, and maintain park trails, bridges, boardwalks, retaining walls, and other trail structures.
Use hand and power tools to complete masonry, carpentry, and trail maintenance projects in remote outdoor settings.
Restore trails by repairing erosion, improving drainage, removing hazards, and protecting natural and cultural resources.
Operate and maintain vehicles, equipment, and tools used to transport materials and complete trail construction and repair projects.
Work safely in backcountry environments while hiking long distances and carrying tools, equipment, and materials to project sites.
Assist with planning and completing trail projects by following drawings, work orders, and supervisor instructions.
Lead or assist volunteer crews during trail maintenance and construction projects while promoting safe work practices.

As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a one year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.

Qualifications

Selective Placement Factor: This position requires a current, valid state-issued driver's license. This requirement is a selective placement factor and will be used as a screen-out. Additional information

This position will be filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority. Eligibility is limited to applicants who reside within the defined local commuting area at the time of application. For this announcement, the local commuting area is the area from which individuals can reasonably commute to the duty station under normal conditions. The defined vicinity for this position is within the following Washington state counties: Mason, Jefferson, Clallam, and Grays Harbor. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service. The agency retains sole discretion and without further competition, the right to extend the duration of this appointment after selection and/or appointment, based on changes to the term appointment regulation(s). Physical Demands: The work is physically demanding and requires frequent hiking over steep, uneven, and rugged terrain while carrying tools, equipment, and materials. Duties may require prolonged standing, walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, lifting, digging, and using hand and power tools. The position requires lifting and carrying heavy objects, often weighing up to 50 pounds or more with assistance or mechanical devices, and frequent overnight travel in remote backcountry locations.

Working Conditions: Work is performed primarily outdoors in remote backcountry settings and in all types of weather, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and high winds. Employees are regularly exposed to rough terrain, wildlife, insects, falling trees or rocks, heavy equipment, and other natural hazards. The work requires following established safety procedures and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
