Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standard. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
While there is no minimum amount of training or experience required, you must have had experience, military or civilian, paid or unpaid, of sufficient scope and quality to perform the duties of a Marine Machinery Repairer, WG-5334-08. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below.
The screen-out elements are the critical knowledge, skills, and abilities that are essential for satisfactory job performance.
Screen-out Job Element: Ability to perform work of a Marine Mechanic Repairer without more than normal supervision.

The job elements can be assessed using the following types of experience:
Applicant must have experience performing such duties as assisting Marine Machine Mechanics in troubleshooting, disassembling, reassembling, installing, adjusting, modifying, maintaining, repairing, and testing complex diesel and gasoline internal combustion marine engines and related equipment. Experience includes working with propulsion machinery, generators, pumps, fuel lines, bilge pumps, electronics, and hydraulic steering systems, complex diesel and gasoline internal combustion marine engines and related systems, including outboard motors, inboard diesel engines, generators, pumps, fuel systems, bilge systems, hydraulic steering systems, trim units, lower units, trailers, lighting systems, safety devices, and vessel support equipment. Work includes identifying worn, damaged, or improperly adjusted components; replacing, reworking, or refinishing parts; performing preventive maintenance; conducting operational and functional tests; and making adjustments to return vessels and equipment to safe operating condition. Familiarity with the operation and maintenance of Contender and Zodiac-style boats, as well as Yamaha, Mercury, Honda, Evinrude, and Caterpillar engines.

Background Investigation: To ensure the accomplishment of our mission, the FLETC requires every employee to be reliable and trustworthy. This review may include financial issues such as delinquency in the payment of debts, child support and/or tax obligations, as well as certain criminal offenses and illegal use or possession of drugs.
Physical Effort: Make repairs which often require them to work in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions. They frequently stand for long periods of time, bend, stoop, crawl under vehicles, and make repairs in other tight spaces. They frequently lift, handle, and carry parts and equipment weighing up to 40 lbs
Working Conditions: Servicing of equipment may be performed in shop or on-site. Most work is done outside under cover or on-site at a dock where other vessels are usually present. Frequently stands on hard surfaces for long periods of time. Crawls under and over vessels and makes repairs while on hard, usually damp surfaces. Performs repairs outside, sometimes in bad weather. Dirt, dust, and grease are always present. Vessel fluids, such as battery acids and hydraulic fluids, may cause burns or irritate the skin. Frequent exposure to the possibility of cuts, bruises, shocks, burns, and strains.
