To qualify at the GS-12 grade level, applicants must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the federal sector. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

Specialized experience must include the following:
- Performing duties as a Second Mate (AGT) or Chief Mate 500(GT) or higher credentialed officer on commercial vessels is required to demonstrate the knowledge skill and ability to fill this position.
- Specializing terminology used in the Mariner Credentialing Program (MCP).
- Knowledge of military ratings and their duties on board ships and ability to relate duties to those performed on merchant ships in order to ensure a fair and equitable application of qualification standards.

Selective Placement Factor, as appropriate: Applicant must hold or have held a U.S. Merchant Mariner credential in the grade of 2nd Mate, Any Gross Tons (AGT) or Chief Mate, 500 Gross Tons (GT) or higher.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
