Duties

  • Examines, identifies and verifies a variety of materials, complete equipment items, technical components, parts, and commodities.
  • Receives, checks, verifies, sorts and classifies materials and equipment by stock number, size, classification and condition.
  • Uses technical manuals to identify and verify materials.
  • Determines the correct condition code, classification, repairability or non-repairability of items and estimates economic feasibility or cost of repair.
  • Initiates records to document receiving and processing discrepancies and material defects found during phases of examination.
  • Operates forklifts with a capacity of lifting loads weighing up to 15,000 lbs and related materials handling equipment to deliver, relocate, up-load, off-load, and move materials and equipment.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition.

The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is: I independently perform the more complex duties such as: verifies shipment destination, quantity, and cube against the shipping paperwork on products received; examines a wide variety of materials received from any source; verifies stock numbers, nomenclature, type, size, condition, date of pack, level of pack, quantity and markings to ascertain compliance with contract or purchase agreement; determines the correct condition code, classification, repairability of items and estimates economic feasibility or cost of repairs; documents receiving and processing discrepancies and material defects found during phases of examination.
  • Ability to do the work of a Materials Examiner and Identifier (Forklift Operator) without more than normal supervision (SOE): Perform the common tasks of the job to be filled but under close supervision, such as moves, stores, and picks a variety of materials; and loads and handles materials and determines how items are to be received and identified.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Effort
Work is performed on hard surface and in areas that require prolonged standing, stooping, bending, lifting, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing 50 pounds. Obtains assistance from others or uses material handling equipment for heavier items. The work often involves pushing and pulling heavy material along conveyor lines.

Working Conditions
Work is performed within a warehouse environment and outside in a containment area on a year round basis. Work is usually performed in areas that are hot, cold, or damp. Employee may be subject to cuts, bruises, abrasions, and scrapes in moving or handling materials and are subject to hazards involved in working in proximity to moving equipment. Protective equipment is provided.
