Summary

This vacancy is being filled via the Direct-Hire Authority (DHA) for a Mathematical Statistician position within the U.S. Census Bureau located in Suitland, Maryland. The Census Bureau is accessible from the Metro Rail Green Line - Suitland Station.

Duties

  • Develops and implements sound statistical methods.
  • Documents work results and findings from survey specifications, and prepares oral presentations and written technical reports for colleagues or for professional meetings.
  • Designs, plans, and implements production, research and evaluation projects for surveys and/or census activities
  • Lead teams to complete statistical projects.

Qualifications

This Job Opportunity Announcement may be used to fill other Mathematical Statistician (Direct Hire Authority), 1529-11/12, FPL GS-12 positions within the Census Bureau in the same geographical location with the same qualifications and specialized experience.

Minimum Education Requirement:

Degree: that included 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics. Courses acceptable toward meeting the mathematics course requirement must have included at least four of the following: differential calculus, integral calculus, advanced calculus, theory of equations, vector analysis, advanced algebra, linear algebra, mathematical logic, differential equations, or any other advanced course in mathematics for which one of these was a prerequisite. Courses in mathematical statistics or probability theory with a prerequisite of elementary calculus or more advanced courses will be accepted toward meeting the mathematics requirements, with the provision that the same course cannot be counted toward both the mathematics and the statistics requirement.

OR

Combination of education and experience - at least 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics, as shown in educational requirement above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

AND

Specialized Experience: For the GS-11, you must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-09 in the Federal service. Experience for this position includes: Using statistical methods to conduct statistical analyses; preparing technical reports and professional papers on social/economic or demographic survey data; establishing survey specifications and methodology; AND documenting analyses and conclusions in written and oral reports.

OR

Education: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree

Specialized Experience: For the GS-12, you must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service. Experience for this position includes: Using statistical methods to conduct statistical analyses; preparing technical reports and professional papers on social/economic or demographic survey data; establishing survey specifications and methodology; documenting analyses and conclusions in written and oral reports; developing solutions to statistical problems; establishing new statistical and analytical methodologies; AND leading teams to complete projects.

Education: Education cannot be substituted for experience.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer.

Additional information

If hired for this position with the Census Bureau, at its headquarters office located in Suitland, Maryland, you will be expected to temporarily telework to maximum extent while the headquarters building is being renovated. Once renovations are completed for your area, you will be notified when to return to the office. At that time, you will be expected to work from your duty station, and you may be eligible to telework, up to 8 days a pay period depending on your respective work schedule, with approval from your supervisor.
