Summary

This vacancy is for a GS-0802-12, Mechanical Technician located in the Office of Naval Engineering, Engineering Division, Electrical/Electronic Branch, U.S. Coast Guard Yard, Baltimore, MD.

Duties

You will serve as a Mechanical Technician and be responsible for managing projects and leading teams, assessing ship system or equipment condition and developing maintenance requirements. Frequent travel is required, as is the ability to work in a shipyard or on board a ship/boat.

Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include:

  • Leads teams to conduct and coordinate ship inspections, drafts complex reports, and provides report recommendations that are consistent with Coast Guard policies and instructions, and conservative engineering principles.
  • Manages and completes projects as directed.
  • Develops Formal Procurement process procurement packages for systems and equipment.
  • Manages contract development, execution, and closeout.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 or equivalent and above):

Examples of qualifying specialized experience include technical work in: drafting, surveying construction estimating, physical science, mathematics, aerospace, architecture, chemicals, electrical or mechanical systems, mining, petroleum, or nuclear systems.

Experience in a trade or craft may be credited as specialized experience when the work provided intensive knowledge of engineering principles, techniques, methods, and precedents. Examples are trade positions with substantial developmental, test, or design responsibilities such as:

  • Planner and estimator who analyzed designs for production purposes.
  • Instrument maker or model maker who performed design or development work on devices fabricated.

To qualify at the GS-7 grade level, applicants must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level in the federal sector. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

Specialized experience must include the following:

  • Experience conducting an assessment condition of ships.
  • Experience working with designs for installation, modification, or replacement of shipboard equipment.
  • Experience managing and complete projects as directed.
