Summary

Positions at this grade are non-supervisory lead technicians responsibility for the coordination and performance of procedures in the Cardiac Cath Lab (CCL). Cath lab technicians at this level function independently and provide a full complement of technical duties in all aspects of the CCL arena, including the outpatient CCL and as assigned by the NM/ANM when supporting other critical care areas.

Major Duties:

  • Ability to scrub, circulate, and monitor and trouble shoot with all procedures as well as advanced CCL procedures (including lead for electrophysiology program) to include but not be limited to: intravascular ultrasound, RADI or wave-wire, Angiojet filter wires, support OR staff with permanent pacemaker insertions, peripheral studies, AICD insertions, etc.
  • Advance knowledge of equipment, medications, and supplies used in the Cardiac Cath Lab with the ability to set up, calibrate, operate and troubleshoot as needed.
  • Knowledge and understanding of waveforms from the great vessels and all chambers of the heart including the ability to recognize and distinguish normal from abnormal, artificial from abnormality, and forewarn the physician of an impending life-threatening situation.
  • Knowledge of quality control and performance improvement indicators for the Cardiac Cath Lab and ability to prepare and analyze quality control of test results.
  • Coordinates the maintenance/repair/installation of all CCL equipment and calls contractors for repairs as needed.
  • Maintains computer security and Patient Health Information (PHI) security and enters data in CCL/Cardiology shared computerized folder daily log, moderate sedation log, and other logs as designated by the NM/ANM
  • Knowledge of electrophysiology, proper lead placement, as well as normal and abnormal EKG and hemodynamic tracings.
  • In depth knowledge of infection control procedures and protocols.
  • . Incumbent will follow hospital policy and be responsible for tracking radiation exposure by dispersing /collecting/submitting radiation dosimeters, and possess knowledge of radiation protection standards, devices and techniques for patients, personnel, and operator exposure. The incumbent will assure that adequate radiation safeguards are maintained.
  • Possesses of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to participate in evaluation of and initiate performance improvement projects, to write policies, procedures, and protocols that pertain to the CCL.
  • Knowledge of Joint Commission and other regulatory accreditation requirements and ensures compliance with all regulations.



Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:00- 3:30 with rotating on-call to include holidays and weekends

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)
Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.
Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education: There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation.
  • Licensure or Certification: Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) is highly desirable. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable for employees at this level.

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations:
GS-10 . In addition to the core competencies defined at the GS-9 level, positions at this grade may be supervisory or non-supervisory with specialized advanced knowledge and assignments.

Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be experience that demonstrates possession of the knowledge required to provide the most complex cardiac catheterization technician services and/or supervisory knowledge, skills, and abilities. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):

Preferred Experience:
  • RCES, RCIS Certification
  • BLS & ACLS Certified
  • Computer program skills / proficiency in Microsoft 365 (Excel, Outlook, Word)
  • EP & Cath experience a must
  • On Call
  • Lead Tech experience

1. Advanced knowledge of complex and non-standard treatment and examination procedures and techniques.
2. Ability to plan and assist in the establishment of a completely integrated treatment and examination program.
3. Ability to evaluate new products and equipment and make recommendations concerning developments which would improve operations.
4. Ability to manage the fiscal matters of the functions supervised (which would include fund controls, contracts, and equipment expenditures), forecast resource and equipment needs, and administer the allocated budget. 21
5. Knowledge of and ability to provide the full range of supervisory duties which would include responsibility for assignment of work to be performed; performance evaluation; selection of staff; and recommendation of awards, advancements, and, when appropriate, disciplinary actions.
