Summary

The Medical Instrument Technician (MIT) is located in the gastrointestinal area of endoscopy section within Medical Procedures Unit Center at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center. MITs at this level provide technical support to Gastroenterology and Pulmonology physicians. They function as the subject matter experts for all equipment and supplies needed to service these specialties.

Duties

DUTIES

  • Performs and/or assists in diagnostic examinations.
  • Coordinates MIT GS-related procedures and operation and maintenance of bio-medical equipment, including video endoscopes, laser, and other specialty equipment.
  • Independently assist both Gastroenterology and Pulmonology providers with complex specialized procedures such as DISE, ERCP, EUS, EBUS, and Navigational bronchoscopy.
  • Responsible for ensuring proper performance of endoscopic equipment and keeping current on all area SOPs and providing annual education on SOPs
  • Technicians at this level, are able to select alternate equipment, adjust equipment settings to accommodate patient needs, and demonstrate high quality techniques to ensure safety and desired outcomes.
  • Work in and outside the GI unit offering technician support during emergent and on-call endoscopic cases.
  • inventory and maintain par levels of specialty equipment for the endoscopy unit including equipment required for performing pulmonary cases.
  • Prepares procedural rooms for the performance of endoscopic and pulmonary procedures.
  • Assists in obtaining biopsies, brushing, polypectomy, inflation of balloon dilators, and handling of intraprocedural equipment for safely and optimum outcomes.
  • Prepare diagnostic biopsy specimens, assessing the adequacy of various types of specimens, proper orienting of biopsy specimens, and placing specimens in proper containers with appropriate labeling for precise lab processing.
  • performs pre-cleaning of scopes used for endoscopies and pulmonary procedures and also performs post-cleaning of equipment prior to transport to SPS to heighten sterility of equipment during processing and decrease risk for infection to patients from reusable medical equipment (RME).
  • Performs in a mutually supportive environment with Physicians and Nursing Service personnel.
  • Responsible for maintaining adequate inventory of supplies in endoscopy rooms.
  • responsible for the technical management of the Endoscopy and Pulmonary suites.


Work Schedule: 1.00 FTE - Day shift, with variable start times. On Call hours expected.

Basic Requirements:
  • Must be a United States Citizen.

IN ADDITION TO THE BASIC REQUIREMENTS APPLICANTS MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING GRADE REQUIREMENTS:

GS-8 Grade Level Requirements: Specialized Experience: Must have at least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-7) which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities related to the duties of the position to be filled. Experience includes: assisting the staff with complex specialized procedures such as ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), proficient with GI endoscopic equipment and ensure proper performance of equipment; selecting alternate equipment or adjust settings to accommodate patient needs. Collecting, processing, and labeling all specimens; training other technicians in basic endoscopic procedures; working in and outside the GI unit offering technician support during emergent and on-call endoscopic cases; and assisting the nurse in patient care duties such as obtaining vital signs, dressing and documenting all pertinent information in the patient's records.

In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs.
  1. Knowledge of complex gastroenterology procedures, such as ERCP with spy glass, ablation procedures, mucosal resection procedures, fine needle aspiration procedures and capsule studies.
  2. Ability to provide briefings and orientations to hospital staff including physicians.
  3. Knowledge of regulatory and advisory agencies such as Joint Commission, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA), American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), and applicable laws such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA).
  4. Knowledge of medical terminology related to GI and biliary systems used to identify pathology or for specimen identification and procedure documentation and knowledge of advanced anatomy and physiology to recognize obvious abnormalities during procedures.
  5. Ability to provide staff development and training.

Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as standing or walking for prolonged periods of time; frequent bending, reaching, stooping, and stretching to set up and take apart equipment and apparatus; lifting and repositioning patients; and pushing or pulling heavy objects such as oxygen tanks and/or equipment. The work may require specific physical characteristics and abilities such as above-average dexterity to perform intricate respiratory therapy procedures.
