In order to qualify, you must meet the experience and/or education requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) assigning accurate procedure codes to patient records; and (2) translating diagnostic and procedural phrases from medical records into coded form, using International Classification of Disease-10, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM), and CPT; and (3) ensuring medical records are accurate by utilizing hospital automated patient health record related software such as, MHS GENESIS to retrieve various reports and input data. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
Certification from American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or American Academy of Professional Coders is highly preferred.
