Summary

This is an open continuous announcement (OCA) to fill current and future Medical Support Assistant vacancies within the Pine Ridge Nursing Departments. The presence of a department does not necessarily indicate a current vacancy. OCAs are utilized to provide our facilities a readily available source of applicants when vacancies occur. A qualification review will be conducted, and qualified candidates will be referred to the departments as positions become vacant and are approved.

These positions are located at the Pine Ridge Service Unit, in Pine Ridge South Dakota. The incumbent is expected to provide efficient services to clients, visitors, and other health care providers under the direction of a registered nurse in the Nursing Departments.

  • Schedule patient appointments.
  • Coordinate patient care based on medical provider referral.
  • Collect and records clinical data from patients.
  • Supports and adheres to hospital and nursing service policies and procedures and maintains record confidentiality and safeguard medical information.
  • Ensures appropriate patient care supplies and forms are available and properly stored.

Work schedule is variable (nights, days, weekends, holidays, call back). Shift rotation may be required.

Background Investigation: If you are selected for this vacancy, you must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.


BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Medical Support Assistance Series 0679 (opm.gov)

In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
GS-03: 6 Months of general experience; OR, 1 Year above high school.
GS-04: 1 year of general experience; OR, 2 years above high school.
GS-05: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level; OR, 4 years above high school.
GS-06: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level.

General Experience: Progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled.

Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks:

Specialized experience for GS-05: Assist patients with making appointments, interview patients to gather information, enter patient data into an electronic health record, assist patients in completing forms, review documents for accuracy, explain processes and policies to patients, initiate health records and admission forms.

Specialized experience for GS-06: knowledge of the appointment system, ability to coordinate patient care based on medical provider referral for purchased referred care services, assist with completion of admissions, transfers, and discharges of patients.


Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

There are no education requirements.

Physical Demands: The work requires some physical exertion such as prolonged periods of standing, bending, reaching, crouching, stooping, stretching, and lifting moderately heavy items such as manuals, supplies, and assisting with patient movement or movement of equipment.

Additional selection(s) of candidates may be possible within 240 days from the date the certificate of eligibles was issued for this announcement.

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.

This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.

Recruitment or relocation incentives may be authorized. At least a 6 month service agreement will be required.

This position has promotion potential to the GS-6 grade level. Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your demonstrated ability to perform the higher level duties, the continuing need for the higher level duties, and "Regulatory/Administrative" approval. Promotion to the next higher grade level is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied.
