Summary

This position is located in the Phlebotomy section of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at the Marion VA Medical Center located in Marion, Illinois.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION***


Duties include but may not be limited to:

  • Determines that appropriate specimens have been collected for tests and prepares samples for testing.
  • Contacts patient or physicians if the patient needs to return for more testing.
  • Performs therapeutic phlebotomy testing and bleeding times according to the written procedure.
  • Monitors blood pressure, pulse, and temperature.
  • Follows the policies and procedures in performing microbiology culture testing.
  • Cleans and restocks the blood collection room and areas where collection trays and equipment are stored.
  • Collects employee drug screens following proper chain of custody protocol.
  • Instruct patients on the proper collection of clean catch urines, 24 hour urine collection, and semen analysis.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 6:00am - 2:30pm, to include rotating weekends and holidays

Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

QUALIFICATIONS

English Language Proficiency - In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR (SCREEN-OUT) - A Selective Placement Factor (SPF) has been identified for this position. Selective Placement Factors (SPF) are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for the position. Applicants who do not meet the SPF are ineligible for further consideration.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS 4) in Federal Service that includes performing the following duties: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Successful completion of a 4 year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate-level education (beyond 18 semester hours) and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must include graduate courses directly related to the work of this position.

Physical Requirements:
Physical demands may involve minimal lifting, standing, foot travel, bending or sitting. The incumbent must have digital dexterity and adequate vision to perform safe venipuncture procedures. Lifting will not exceed a weight of 10 pounds. The incumbent must fully utilize all safety practice and equipment provided by the medical center, and in compliance with local and accrediting agency requirements.
