Summary

This position is at Glacier National Park in St. Mary, MT. The primary purpose of this position is to overhaul, repair, service and maintain Glacier National Park's fleet of vehicles and equipment.

Duties

  • Performs preventive maintenance, diagnoses and repairs mechanical, hydraulic and electrical troubles for Diesel and gasoline powered engineering equipment. Including graders, front-end loaders with attachments, crawler-type tractors with dozer and grader blades, asphalt spreaders, road sweepers, stationary diesel generators and snow removal equipment.
  • Diagnoses and repairs the full range of mechanical and electrical, fuel, hydraulic and wheel assemblies.Performs basic acetylene and electric arc welding to repair breaks in items such as tools, tow bars, and vehicle frames.
  • Responsible for operation of gasoline or diesel powered engineering equipment with wheel or crawler traction as well as cars and light trucks. Equipment to be operated includes dozers, motor graders, tractors, snow plows, snow blowers, front-end loaders, track and wheel hoes, trucks and tractors with low boy trailer, cranes, and miscellaneous equipment. Most equipment is hydraulically operated with some reel and cable pieces.
  • Fills out daily work reports on all work accomplished. Assures that all reports are turned in to the appropriate office at least on a weekly basis and that all labor, equipment and materials are properly accounted for prior to submission.

  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You must possess and maintain a current Class B CDL (or higher) Commercial Driver's License within 12 months of entry on duty.
  • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or(c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.

Physical Demands: The incumbent will lift and handle objects weighing up to 50 lbs. unassisted, heavier objects with assistance. Frequently must work with hand and arms at shoulder height to overhead position, stop, stretch, bend, and work in tiring positions.

Working Conditions: Incumbent will at times be exposed to adverse temperatures and weather conditions such as blowing snow and driving rain and temperature extremes of-30 to +100 F. Is exposed to drafts, fumes, loud noises, and high temperatures. Standing, lying, and bending is required on hard, cold, damp floors. Dirt, dust, and grease are always present, and vehicle fluids, lubricants and battery acid may be spilled on body or clothing. There is a chance of cuts, burns, bruises, shock, and strains. The incumbent will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as respirators, hearing protections, clothing and eye protection, safety vest and hard hat.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.
