Summary

The incumbent transports patients, employees and visitors throughout the southeastern part of State of Michigan, primarily in the Metro Detroit area. The incumbent will operate vehicles including, but not inclusive to, passenger cars, station wagons, mini-vans, full-size vans, and pickup trucks. The incumbent functions in the grounds section of Facilities Management Service at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center in Detroit, MI.

Duties

The duties of the Motor Vehicle Operator include, but are not limited to:

  • Transporting patients, employees and visitors throughout the southeastern part of State of Michigan, primarily in the Metro Detroit area.
  • Operating passenger cars, station wagons, mini-vans, full-sized vans and pickup trucks.
  • Picking up and delivering supplies, prosthetic equipment, mail and correspondence and emergency items to and from the medical center in the Detroit and surrounding areas.
  • Performing first echelon preventative maintenance duties set up by the facility.
  • Performing preventative maintenance established by the General Services Administration.
  • Reporting all maintenance problems to the supervisor as soon as they are noticed.
  • Maintaining an accurate log sheet.
  • Completing all motor vehicle tickets.
  • Loading and unloading vehicle.
  • Reading and interpreting all information in the General Service Administration operator's packet on accident reporting and getting repairs.
This position requires a valid, current state-issued Driver's License and a valid, current state-issued Chauffeur's license.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 12:00pm - 8:30pm; may be subject to emergency call-in or off duty-hours in order to accomplish the needs of the service
Compressed/Flexible Schedule: Compressed may be available based on approval from the supervisor

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. This position requires a valid, current state-issued Driver's License and a valid, current state-issued Chauffeur's license.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Lift parcels weighing 5 to 75 pounds, assist patients who are amputees, with canes or walkers, lift medical equipment, and change tires on the highway. Required to load and unload vehicle. Subject to cuts, bruises, and other injuries as a result of accidents while driving or loading and unloading vehicles. Must be able to do heavy lifting, pushing and have use of all fingers, and both hands. Both hands are required to be able to operate vehicles. Required to do walking, standing, crawling, kneeling, and climbing with legs and arms. Must have the ability for rapid mental and muscular coordinator simultaneously. Must have ability to distinguish shares of colors and hear without aid. While driving the incumbent is exposed to exhaust fumes, dust and other pollution, eye strain from bright sunlight, streetlights, and headlights from other vehicles. Works both indoors and outdoors in the rain, sleet, snow, heat, cold and other undesirable working conditions and must dress properly for all types of weather and working conditions. Must be able to work around machinery and moving parts and moving objects or vehicles. They must be able to work alone at times.
