Duties
Major duties and responsibilities will include:
- Operates gasoline, diesel, and electric motor vehicles, including sedans, vans, minibuses, ambulances, shuttle buses, light and heavy trucks, and motor coaches to transport patients, visitors, employees, supplies, and equipment which typically have an approximate gross vehicle weight of up to 38,000 pounds.
- Operates vehicles on public roads and highways in rural and urban areas while complying with traffic laws, safety regulations, and organizational policies.
- Transports psychiatric, geriatric, and long-term care patients, as well as visitors and employees, to and from VA facilities, medical appointments, transportation terminals, and other assigned destinations.
- Handles patient/passenger, and cargo loading and unloading from vehicle
- Secures cargo to prevent damage to contents during transport and ensures that the vehicle is not loaded beyond the maximum capacity
- Uses safe driving practices while maneuvering vehicles in congested traffic, loading docks, parking garages, ambulance bays, narrow spaces, and difficult backing situations.
- Loads and unloads by hand but may use a handcart to transport items.
- Protects materials, supplies and equipment from the elements.
- Performs routine safety and maintenance checks on the vehicle to include, but not limited to, the addition of fuels or lubricants and the checking of tire pressure.
- Maintains cleanliness and professional appearance of both the in and outside of the vehicle.
- Completes all maintenance service records to document activities.
- Provides courtesy rides to staff, Veterans, and visitors as needed to and from parking lots or garages and/or to and from buildings on the facility campus.
- Utilizes maps, GPS systems, schedules, and route information to determine efficient travel routes, maintain scheduled stops, and minimize delays caused by traffic or road hazards.
- Performs grounds maintenance including seasonal maintenance such as snow removal
- Follows verbal and written instructions from dispatchers, supervisors, trip tickets, and transportation schedules regarding vehicle assignments, destinations, and transportation requirements.
- Maintains transportation records, delivery documentation, related logs, and reports accidents, delays, vehicle malfunctions, or safety concerns to supervisors in a timely manner.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; Full - Time, various schedules: 5:00am- 1:30pm, 6:00am-2:30pm, 7:30am-4:00pm, 11:30am-8:00pm

Qualifications

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR (SCREEN-OUT) - A Selective Placement Factor (SPF) has been identified for this position. The SPF for this position is: DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIREMENT: Requires a current, valid state-issued Commercial Driver's License (CDL)- Class A with Passenger Endorsement AND Air Brake Endorsement is required for this position. (Note: We may not accept pictures. Please Do Not submit a copy of your license. This requirement will be verified if interviewed.)

SCREEN-OUT: Ability to do the work of a Motor Vehicle Operator without more than normal supervision. To qualify for this position, experience must include: Transporting passengers or patients using assigned motor vehicles, operating buses, vans, trucks, or patient transport vehicles, utilizing lift systems when loading/unloading patients/passengers; reading and understanding road maps to determine the most efficient and safest route to take; performing daily pre-trip vehicle inspections, maintaining vehicle cleanliness, utilizing work-issued communication devices (i.e., cell phone; two-way radio) to sufficiently communicate with dispatch; following instructions or scheduled routes, recording trip, passenger, or attendance information, reporting mechanical or safety issues to a supervisor, following traffic laws and safety procedures. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The incumbent exerts Moderate physical effort is used in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet and legs to simultaneously operate hand and foot controls, and in normal driving because of the vehicle or equipment involved. Physical effort is required in the frequent handling of patients including those in wheelchairs or on stretchers. May occasionally handle objects weighing up to 75 pounds. Physical effort may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs while on assigned trips.
WORKING CONDITIONS: At this level the incumbent works mostly outside and operates vehicles in all kinds of weather (sunshine, rain, sleet, snow, etc.) in a controlled traffic environment throughout a government installation or establishment and on public roadways. Incumbent may be exposed to congested traffic conditions, unsafe roads conditions due to ice, snow and rain, fumes and dust. Also, may be in contact with diseases from patients. Incumbents will operate vehicles in all types of traffic and weather on public roads and is exposed to the danger of serious accidents. Incumbent will drive in heavy rain and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
