Duties

At the full performance level (WG-08) the major duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Operate motor vehicles including platform trucks, van trucks, stake trucks, dump trucks, specialty pumping equipment and trash removal trucks.
  • Drive vehicles over public roads at highway speeds to transport passengers, supplies, materials or equipment and tools or to tow equipment throughout rural and urban areas.
  • Operate vehicles over rough terrain, in close quarters and in heavy traffic on both long and short hauls
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance such as checking and adding fluids to bring to proper levels, checking air pressure and adding when required.

  • You must be at least 18 years of age or older to operate government vehicles.
  • As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.
This probationary period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. In determining if your employment advances the public interest, the agency will consider:
  • your performance and conduct;
  • the needs and interests of the agency;
  • whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government; and
  • whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service.
Under applicable law, the employment of an individual serving a probationary or trial period automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirmatively certifies, in writing, that the individual's employment should continue and that their appointment should be finalized. Your resume must clearly show that you are able to perform motor vehicle operations with full supervision such as:
  • Operating gasoline or diesel-powered heavy equipment;
  • The use of motor vehicles of more the 26,000 pounds capacity to transport material to and from the work site;
  • Operating a front-end loader, and trucks of more the 26,000 pounds capacity with snow plows and/or blowers, liquid tanks, and salt spreaders.

Physical Demands: Moderate to heavy physical effort in climbing on tractors to hook up service lines, lower landing gears, and in climbing on the trailer to load or tie down cargo. Considerable physical effort may be required in backing of vehicles, to change tires, and make limited emergency repairs. Required to frequently lift items weighing over 50 pounds. Climbing of ladders, scaffolding, and working in and around equipment and power tools.

Working Conditions: Majority of the work is performed outdoors where incumbent will be exposed to extreme hot and cold temperatures. Required to operate equipment in all types of weather conditions and on a variety of road surfaces. Subject to noise, vibration and exhaust fumes from equipment and vehicles, and is exposed to the danger of serious accidents.
