About the Position: The incumbent will be assigned to the 406th Army Field Support Brigade, Logistics Readiness Center, Supply and Services Division, at Fort AP Hill, VA.

Duties

  • Uses automated equipment and systems as required for processing transactions and performing technical research.
  • Ensures safe shipment, receipt, storage and movement of ammunition and explosives during storage, Inter Depot Transfers (IDT), issues, turn-ins and re-warehousing operations as directed by internal procedures.
  • Prepares items for shipment to other depots and/or installations.
  • Advises unit personnel effectively on proper ammunition handling procedures.
  • Inspects ammunition and components using appropriate Ammunition Surveillance Procedures.
  • Operates material handling equipment, including forklifts capable of lifting up to 25,000 pounds, 1/2 to 2 1/2 ton trucks, passenger vans, pallet jacks, and hand tools, as required.

  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 70 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 11.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of less than 10% of the time.
  • This position requires the ability to possess an adjudicated Tier 3 background investigation, for non-critical sensitive, moderate risk positions.
  • This position requires a forklift certification which can be obtained within 6 months.
  • Introduction to Ammunition online course must be completed in 3 months.
  • Class V Issue and Turn-In Proc for Using Unit online course must be completed in 3 months.
  • The U.S. Army Explosive Safety Familiarization online course must be completed in 3 months.
  • Military Munitions Rule online course must be completed in 3 months.
  • Technical Transportation of Hazardous Material online course must be completed in 6 months.
  • Ammunition Storage online course must be completed in 6 months.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Munitions Handler (Forklift Operator/Motor Vehicle Operator) without more than normal supervision. I can 1) Receive munition for proper storage; 2) Prepare cards showing quantity, nomenclature, organization ownership, etc; 3) Process associated paperwork involved in shipments and 4) Operate forklifts/ drive 1/2 to 2 1/2 ton truck. I work under the normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Effort: Work is performed by standing on hard surfaces for extended periods of time. When examining or moving ammunition, there is frequent bending, walking, lifting, reaching, stretching, pushing, pulling, climbing and crouching. Muscular dexterity and mental, visual, and physical coordination is required in handling, loading, unloading and storing ammunition items. There is a requirement to bend, stoop, and work in tiring and sometimes uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts items weighing up to 45 pounds. There is occasional lifting and carrying of items weighing up to 70 pounds with the assistance of others or material handling equipment.

Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside in areas that may be extremely hot, below freezing, damp, drafty, or poorly lighted. Work is performed regardless of weather conditions. Adheres at all times to fire, safety and security regulations within assigned areas of operations. Regularly exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, bruises, abrasions, falls, and injury from falling stocks and working in close proximity to forklifts. Subject to exposure of explosive hazards, lead residues and chemical fumes. Work may require wearing protective clothing such as hard-hats, steel-toed shoes, rubber gloves, protective masks, and rubber aprons. Incumbent is required to carry protective mask when handling or entering an area that contains Category B or C chemical ammunition. Regularly handles boxes that are treated with Polychlorinated Biphenyls PCB.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
