In this position, you will:

• Perform collections management duties, including the intake and processing of collection items, preparation of outgoing packages, receipt and unpacking of incoming shipments, and reporting of any concerns or irregularities to the supervisor.
• Assist visiting scholars with collection access, proper handling of collection materials, and use of library resources. Respond to inquiries from researchers and the general public regarding collection holdings, curatorial practices, and archival materials.
• Prepare correspondence and create records for loans, acquisitions, and disposals of collection items as directed. May resolve minor issues with lenders, borrowers, or donors to the collection.
• Maintain various departmental databases on packages, supplies, equipment, literature, space, etc. relevant to collections management. Assist in the logistics of moving parts of collections in and out of the museum campus, offsite storage facility, and other associated collections facilities.

Qualifications

Selective Placement Factor: This position has a Selective Placement Factor, which is a skill, knowledge, ability, or other characteristic essential for the job's satisfactory performance. The Selective Placement Factor represents the minimum requirements for this position and is a prerequisite for appointment. Applicants who do not meet the Selective Placement Factor are ineligible for further consideration.

Selective Placement Factor: You must demonstrate the ability to read Italian, German, and/or French to support collection research, cataloging activities, exhibition development, and related duties.

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal Service.  For this position, specialized experience is defined as handling objects in a museum or similar cultural institution and using collections management software to enhance metadata and/or object location moves.

How you will be evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Applicants for this position may be evaluated in multiple stages. The first stage is an evaluation of your responses to the online multiple-choice questions that assess your experience, education, and/or training for the job-related competencies below:

• Knowledge of collections management practices including art handling, storage practices, and condition reporting.
• Skill in using collection information systems to support departmental operations, scholarly research, and public access to collections.
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing on a wide range of correspondence and documentation related to departmental projects, exhibitions, and collections.
• Knowledge of established conservation procedures and techniques to handle and move objects during exhibition and conservation projects.

Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria:

• Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above.
• Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above.
• Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree.

This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied. Preference eligibles who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher.
