Summary

About the Position: This position is with the Defense Health Agency, at US Naval Hospital Director of Nursing Ambulatory Procedure Unit. Healthcare options may be limited in the overseas area.

Duties

  • Deliver specialized nursing care to emergent patients with illness and injuries that require adaptation of established nursing procedures.
  • Prepare assessments, data collections, interventions, and outcome evaluations for all age groups.
  • Collaborate with Medical staff, the healthcare team, and the patient/family/significant others to establish optimal treatment and diagnostic priorities.
  • Issue intravenous (IV) protocol sedation to all age groups according to command protocols.
  • Administer all emergency and routine medications per command policy, as well as aerosol inhalants and titration of vasoactive medications.
  • Assist with Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training for military ambulance crews.
  • Validate documentation of the nursing process including timeliness and accuracy from triage to discharge.
  • Promote positive relationship among patients, their significant other, and the healthcare team.
  • Direct particular attention to supporting emotional needs in a demanding and stressful emergency care environment.

  • This position requires regular contact with children under the age 18 and a favorable determination of suitability to do so.
  • Completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs.
  • Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross. Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
  • This position requires certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation with Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) training.
  • This position is subject to screening and update of required immunizations unless exempted for medical or administrative reasons in accordance with Army Regulation 40-562, Chapters 3 and 4.
  • his position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
  • This position is required to work uncommon tours of duty hours such as, working either fixed or rotating shifts, evenings, weekends and/or holidays.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

Education: A graduate or higher-level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education(external link), Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs(external link), Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education(external link), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained.

Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (external link) is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination(external link). In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017, or before. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Education: Successful completion of a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field

OR

Experience: A diploma, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in Nursing from a professional nursing program and possession of at least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level or above) which includes providing nursing care to emergency room patients, administering medications, and providing patient or staff education. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

EXEMPTION: You are exempt from the qualification requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017, or before. Applicants claiming this exemption must meet one of the requirements below.

OR
3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education from a professional nursing program.

  • If an employee brings a child to an overseas location and that child is entitled to attend a DoD school on a space-required basis in accordance with DoDEA Regulation 1342.13, the DoDEA and the Military Department responsible for providing related services will ensure that the child, if eligible for special education, receives a free appropriate public education, including related services pursuant to DoDI 1342.12 and DoDM 1342.12.
  • If an employee brings an infant or toddler (up to 3 years of age) to an overseas location, and that infant or toddler, but for the child's age, is entitled to attend the DoDEA on a space-required basis in accordance with DoDEA Regulation 1342.13, then the Military Department responsible for EIS will provide the infant or toddler with the required EIS in accordance with the eligibility criteria consistent with DoDI 1342.12 and DoDM 1342.12.
  • Employees (and family members) who require medical or dental care in the overseas location will be responsible for obtaining and paying for such care. Access for civilian employees and their families to military medical and dental treatment facilities is on a space-available and reimbursable basis only.
  • Pay retention may be offered to selected applicants for positions at overseas locations. Pay retention will not be offered as an incentive for employees moving between overseas positions.
  • Selectees may receive certain foreign area benefits such as: Living Quarters Allowance (LQA) or government quarters, home leave, etc. Selectees will have their eligibility for foreign area benefits determined at the time of hire in accordance with Department of State Standardized Regulation (DSSR) and DoDI 1400.25 volume 1250.
