Summary

This position is located in the Bemidji Area at the White Earth Health Center in White Earth, Minnesota. The purpose of this position is to provide clinical nursing services in an ambulatory care setting that may include emergency room, urgent care or the outpatient department. This position requires licensure as a registered nurse.

  • Provides comprehensive, age appropriate nursing care to neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults and geriatrics.
  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to patients based on nursing assessment and on the physician's medical plan of care.
  • Carries out nursing and medical plans as delegated and initiates appropriate follow up action.
  • Identify individual patient problems and develop, implement and evaluate patient care plans.
  • Documents observations, nursing interventions, therapeutic measures and status of coordinated activities in electronic health record.

Education
A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

Licensure
The work experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Basic Requirements for the GS-5 Grade Level
To qualify at the GS-5 grade level, applicants must meet one of the following qualification requirements:
  • Possession of a bachelor's degree in Nursing with no experience; or
  • Possession of a diploma or associate degree in professional nursing and one full year of professional nursing experience.
Basic Requirements for the GS-7 Grade Level
In addition to the above Basic Requirements, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
  • Possession of a bachelor's degree in Nursing and eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement provision;
  • Possession of a bachelor's degree in Nursing and at least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-5 grade level); Examples of experience include: Providing professional nursing care to patients, reviewing medical records and administering medication in accordance with instructions and assisting physicians with procedures.
  • Possession of a diploma or associate degree in professional nursing and two full years of professional nursing experience; or
  • Completion of at least one full year of graduate education in a professional nursing educational program.
Basic Requirements for the GS-9 Grade Level
In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
  • Possession of a master's degree in professional nursing; or
  • At least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-7 grade level or above) and possession of a diploma, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in Nursing from a professional nursing program. Examples include: Providing professional nursing care principles, practices and procedures required to assess needs of patients; knowledge of pharmaceuticals, their desired effects, side effects and complications of their use; recognizing adverse signs and symptoms which are not always apparent and to react promptly in emergency situations including the implementation of life saving procedures; providing counseling, guidance and health instruction to patients; and identifying disease entities in order to recognize complications and therapeutic interventions required.

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.

This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.
