The purpose of this position is to provide comprehensive care to pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients within the Indian Health Service:

  • Perform professional nursing duties in ambulatory, inpatient, pediatric, or other areas of nursing in a clinic or hospital setting.
  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to patients based on nursing assessments and on the physician's medical plan of care.
  • Identify individual patient problems and develop, implement, and evaluate patient care plans.

This is a designated position covered by Public Law 101-630, requiring contact or control over Indian children. Due to this requirement, the agency must ensure that persons hired for these positions have not been found guilty of or pleaded nolo contendere or guilty to certain crimes.

The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.

Position subject to rotating shifts; days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Shift rotations may vary, from 8, 10 and 12 hour shifts.

Education
A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education(external link), Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs(external link), Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education(external link), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained.

Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (external link) is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

Licensure
For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination(external link). In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks:

Specialized Experience for GS-05: Possession of a bachelor's degree in Nursing with no experience. OR, Possession of a diploma or associate degree in professional nursing and one full year of professional nursing experience.

Specialized Experience for GS-07: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Provides direct professional nursing care to patients, reviewing history of medical care, assessing current health conditions and evaluating ability of patients to self-care. Provide clinical and procedural nursing interventions administering medication in accordance with the plan of care and assisting providers with procedures. Participating in patient centered medical home by providing care coordination based on patient needs, assisting patient in establishing goals and providing education to patient and families to improve their health outcomes.
OR
Possession of a diploma or associate degree in professional nursing and two full years of professional nursing experience above;
OR
Possession of a bachelor's degree in Nursing and eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement provision;
OR
Completion of at least one full year of graduate education in a professional nursing educational program.

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.

This position may be covered by a Bargaining Unit.
