Duties
Portland is a port city in the Pacific Northwest and the most populous city in the U.S. state of Oregon. Situated in the northwestern area of the state at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers. Portland is known for having the amenities of a major city (such as an international airport, an efficient public transit system, major league sports teams and many museums and art galleries) and the charms of a small city (such as plentiful arts and crafts fairs,
independent bookstores and local traditions like the annual
Rose Festival Parade). Rain or shine, you can take advantage of the city's proximity to nature by playing in the
Willamette River, wandering through lush public
parks and gardens,
biking the city's 162 miles (261 km) of bike lanes and
hiking trails both within city limits and in the nearby
Columbia River Gorge.
The NP is a licensed independent practitioner with advanced education and national certification who provides evidence-based care for a population of patients.
Duties include but not limited to:
- Incumbent will serve as an agent for supervising physicians. Orders written by him/her are to be considered as coming from the supervising physician(s).
- The incumbent will be responsible for initial screening of patients in outpatient clinics. A screening may include history, physical exams, ordering laboratory tests and x-rays, electrocardiograms, and other routine diagnostic tests. May institute appropriate treatment for minor orthopedic problems.
- Prescriptive privileges will follow the guidelines enumerated in VACO Circular 10-84-112. The prescribing of drugs for inpatients is restricted to routine medications and DEA Class II, III, and IV controlled substances. The incumbent will be authorized to prescribe all routine medications as listed in the VA Pharmacy Formulary with the exception of chemotherapeutic agents, anticoagulants and special medications restricted to approval by another section or department.
- The incumbent will initiate evaluations and therapy for patients as outlined in their physician assistant practice description on file in the Operative Care Division offices, and may write prescriptions for medication as commensurate with their VA prescriptive privileges.
- Participates in the screening of in-hospital consultations received, may be written or verbal, as outlined in (2), and in determining appropriate disposition.
- Performs simple laceration suturing; venipuncture; arterio-puncture; urinary catheterization; suture removal; administration of IV fluids; administration of intramuscular, subcutaneous and intradermal injections; administers local nerve blocks; performs procedures such as arthrocentesis with administration of local anesthetics and corticosteroids; performs lumbar punctures, and cleansing and debridement of wounds as needed.
- Works with or in the absence of the Orthopedic Cast Technician, to include: application and removal of plaster and fiberglass casts; treatment by alignment and immobilization of non-displaced and minimally displaced fractures of the extremities; and fitting orthopedic appliances, i.e. braces, splints and assistive devices.
- Conducts pre-operative work-ups for orthopedic patients.
- Conduct orthopedic patient and family teaching/education to provide continuity of care.
- The incumbent shall be available for assisting in the operating room as needed.
