Summary

The position is located in the Nutrition Guidance and Analysis Division in the Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion. The incumbent's work will include analysis of nutrition evidence to provide technical advice, develop dietary guidance, and conduct nutrition education and outreach activities. The purpose of the work is to inform the development and implementation of National food and dietary guidance, particularly the Dietary Guidelines.

Duties

  • Establishes objectives, tasks, and timelines for projects.
  • Plans, conducts and/or directs projects to achieve desired outcomes within resource and time constraints. Independently handles multiple assignments, coordinating with the Center staff and others as needed.
  • Critically reviews and provides constructive comments on plans, research and project proposals, and manuscripts relating to areas of work for other Federal agencies, industry groups, and professional organizations.
  • Publishes reports, white papers, and articles in professional journals and through other appropriate outlets.
  • Presents results and findings of analysis, research, and activities for use by nutrition promoters and educators and others.
  • Communicates with Center staff, Federal, State and local government officials, representatives from professional and trade associations, academia, industry, and public interest groups, members of the public and foreign visitors.
  • Independently handles multiple assignments, coordinating with the Center staff and others as needed, and keeps the Leadership informed of progress, problems, and opportunities.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirement:

To qualify for the Dietician and Nutritionist job series, all applicants must meet at least one of the following degree requirements by the closing date of the job announcement:

Successful completion of a degree in the field of dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science in an educational program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) (formerly American Dietetic Association (ADA)) for dietitians or nutritionists. (You must attach proof of completion, to include AND/ADA verification.)
OR
Professional registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). (You must attach a copy of your registration.)
OR
You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0630 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. (You must provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.)

In addition to the basic requirements, you must also meet the MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS for this position: To qualify for the GS-13 level, your resume must clearly demonstrate that you have one full year of specialized experience comparable in difficulty and responsibility to at least the GS-12 level in private and/or federal service. Example of qualifying experience include the following types of tasks performed on a regular and recurring basis:

- Reviewing and interpreting nutrition evidence to provide technical advice and inform development of dietary guidance;
- Managing nutrition-related projects and outreach activities to achieve objectives within budget and time constraints; AND
- Communicating orally and in writing with a wide array of audiences, including policy officials, management, nutrition professionals, scientists, consumers, and representatives of the industry, public interest groups, and the media.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
