Duties

Protects patrons from hazardous conditions by ensuring rules and regulations are enforced. Performs water and land rescues up to the standard of training when a water emergency is taking place (e.g. drowning, medical or trauma in the water). Undertakes rescue operation in all climates and water conditions. Manages respiratory and cardiac emergencies to include performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), bag-valve-mask resuscitation, or automatic external defibrillation (AED). Uses and maintains care of emergency equipment such as specialized kits and bags, backboards, suction devices, splints, stretchers, oxygen delivery systems, and monitoring equipment. Controls external bleeding with direct pressure and treats shock. Splints and immobilizes fractures and dislocations for transport. Attempts to ascertain whether the patron has preexisting medical problems and to obtain critical medical information from the patron.

Performs initial and on-going patron assessment and physical examination. Determines priority of patron care based on assessment findings. Takes, records, and monitors patron¿s baseline vital signs including temperature, blood pressure, and pulse. Assists patrons in taking emergency medications and interventions. Employs a variety of established emergency medical techniques, methods, and equipment to stabilize the patient for transport to the receiving facility. Assists intermediate life support, activates the Emergency Action Plan and summons advance medical personnel. Prepares appropriate and relevant patient care documentation and reports to ensure medical requirements are met and accurately reported.

Conducts safety inspections of equipment. Ensures proper disposal of medical waste and potentially infectious materials. Performs the duty of an Incident command in the event of an emergency, prior to advance personal arriving on the scene. Completes appropriate accident reports. Removes hazardous materials from beach (i.e. floating debris, glass, etc.). Participates in joint training exercise with outside agencies. Participates in Mutual aid response as required. Provides a beach condition report. Marks swim and surf areas with a flag system. When appropriate, operates rescue vehicles (e.g. PWC rescue craft, patrol boats and automobiles). Performs light maintenance on lifeguard towers, equipment and vehicles.

Provides World Class Customer Service with an emphasis on courtesy. Assists customers and communicates positively in a friendly manner. Takes action to solve problems quickly. Alerts the higher-level supervisor, or proper point of contact for help when problems arise. Adheres to safety regulations and standards. Promptly reports any observed workplace hazards, and any injury, occupational illness, and/or property damage resulting from workplace mishaps to the immediate supervisor. Adheres to established standards of actively supporting the principles of the EEO program and prevention of sexual harassment.

Performs other related duties as assigned. This is a mixed position where the incumbent must be able to lift and carry objects up to 45lbs independently and objects over 45lbs with assistance is required, while performing normal duties in the area.  May perform work that poses physical demands beyond normal requirements during rescue. Work may be performed in settings where exposure to moderate discomforts, high temperatures, and/or adverse weather conditions exist.

EVALUATIONS:

Qualifications

Ability to complete an ocean run swim run event (1/4 mile run, 500-meter swim, 1/4 mile run). Ability to complete a 500-meter swim in less than 10 min in a controlled environment. Knowledge of the beach environment, marine life, and beach and water hazards is required. Proficient in surf lifesaving techniques and radio communications to perform a safe and efficient rescue operation. Must have the ability to obtain CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Emergency Response through the American Red Cross or equivalent. Perform skills required to maintain USLA rescue skills and agency certification.
