Summary

The VA Boston Healthcare System is seeking a full time, Occupational Therapist (OT), Driver Training Program Coordinator for the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service of the VA Boston Healthcare System at the Brockton location. This position is a full-time postion at 40 hours per week.

Duties

The position is in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service, will be stationed at the Brockton Campus, and will require intermittent travel to complete on-site evaluations as needed at other VISN 1 locations. Candidate must have at least one year of experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level and that is directly related to the position being filled. The primary functions of this position are to provide clinical evaluations and treatment to patients referred for driver training services, oversee the driver training program, and represent the program within the VISN. Incumbent will spend at least 25% of time in performance of duties directly related to coordinating the driver training program. Some of the responsibilities are but not limited to; the incumbent evaluates the patient for driver training needs using assessments that test visual acuity, depth perception, peripheral vision and color vision. Reaction time tests are performed, as well as executive functioning cognitive tests. If warranted, the patient is taken on the road in the driver training vehicle on a set route designed to incorporate components that can be tested on an RMV driver's road test. The incumbent also participates in vehicle modification and adaptation and orders adaptive equipment for the vehicle if needed. The incumbent must maintain open communication with VA Prosthetics Chiefs within VISN 1 as well as with all vendors. The individual must also demonstrate practices and procedures of occupational therapy services that are necessary to plan and direct the wide range of activities relating to various rehabilitation settings.   • Knowledge of contemporary occupational therapy within specialty area to provide clinical guidance, training, or education for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to set priorities, delegate tasks, meet multiple deadlines, and balance responsibilities.
  • Ability to articulate and communicate the assignment, project, problem to be solved, actionable events, and objectives; as well as provide direction on work methods, practices and procedures in administration and/or education methodologies.
  • Ability to monitor and report on the status and progress of work, evaluate the program to ensure that methods, deadlines and quality have been met, and ensure adjustments to the work process are in accordance with priorities.
  • Ability to develop and coordinate treatment and/or educational programs within a concentrated field or specialty area, such as amputee, spinal cord injury, chronic pain, student clinical education/residency programming, polytrauma/traumatic or brain injury.
  • Ability to effectively motivate and manage a diverse clinical staff with widely divergent backgrounds, interests, and points of view.
Preferred Experience: Be certified driver rehabilitation specialist (CDRS).

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
  • Education and/or Experience. The individual must meet at least one of the following requirements below:
    • (a) Bachelor's degree in occupational therapy and two (2) years of experience as an occupational therapist; NOTE: The baccalaureate degree must be from an approved program prior to the AOTA January 1, 2005 decision that the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) would only accredit master or doctoral degree programs in occupational therapy. or
    • (b) Bachelor's degree in occupational therapy and two (2) full years of graduate education in a related field; NOTE: The baccalaureate degree must be from an approved program prior to the AOTA January 1, 2005 decision that ACOTE would only accredit master or doctoral degree programs in occupational therapy or
    • (c) Master's Degree or higher in occupational therapy. AND
    • Individuals must be a graduate of a degree program in occupational therapy approved by the ACOTE or predecessor organizations. This is inclusive of an internship (supervised fieldwork experience required by the educational institution). ACOTE is the only accreditation agency recognized by the United States Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
  • Certification. Candidates must possess a current NBCOT certification as an Occupational Therapist.
  • State Licensure. Candidates must possess a full, current, and unrestricted state license, to practice occupational therapy in a state, territory or Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia.
  • English Proficiency. Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria)

Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met:

(3) Assignment. [Occupational therapy program coordinators in this assignment 11 evaluate, plan and direct a program to ensure proper coordination of care within the local facility inclusive of regional/national stakeholders such as The Joint Commission and the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), Universities, AOTA, and the VHA, Office of Academic Affiliation as appropriate. The OT program coordinator has full responsibility for managing the day-to-day activities of the program. They may be responsible for the coordination of assignments for multiple professionals comprising of an interdisciplinary team. These programs may include but are not limited to polytrauma/traumatic brain injury, chronic pain, amputation, caregiver support program, spinal cord injury and clinical education programs. The OT program coordinator successfully collaborates with leadership, supervisors and staff to facilitate efficient and effective delivery of patient-centered care. They develop and modify standard operating procedures and ensure procedures are applicable to the assigned program. This assignment requires administrative direction and decision making skills, but does not necessarily require formal supervisory responsibility. The OT program coordinator makes decisions that affect staff and other resources with a wide latitude of control and independent judgment. They assist with special administrative projects such as strategic planning, performance improvement, and coordination and training of interdisciplinary team members.

Physical Requirements: The work involves standing, stooping, moderate to heavy lifting, sitting, pulling, assisting patients in transferring from various devices (bed, W/C, floor, motorized vehicles, mats etc.). Additionally, moving patient and supplies and pushing patient in their manual or motorized W/C's. Additionally, the incumbent is required to work at a computer workstation to complete his/her documentation for clinical patient care or administrative needs. Occasionally, the incumbent may need to drive a government vehicle. Incumbent will be required to travel to all campuses of VA BHS.
