Summary

About the Position: As an Operator, Derrickboat with the Illinois Waterway Maintenance Section, you will serve as an operator of a diesel or diesel-electric derrick or crane aboard a derrick barge or crane barge engaged in channel maintenance and hoisting services. You will interpret maps, drawings, plans, specifications, directives, equipment manufacturers operating and maintenance manuals, etc., and applies these criteria to the work at hand.

Duties

  • Serve as an operator of derrick or crane aboard a derrick or crane barge engaged in lock and dam maintenance and hoisting services.
  • Responsible for exercising knowledge of the derrickboat's capacities and limitations, checking rigging, estimating loads and distance, etc.
  • Complete daily, monthly, and quarterly equipment inspections and reports and submits same to supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Exercise caution, apply strict safety standards to avoid accidents, and is responsible for the safety of crew members around the crane and hoisting areas.
  • Maneuvers barge by using current and spuds, or by signaling pilot to maneuver the barge.
  • Ensures barge is secured by use of lines and spuds.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must currently possess and be able to maintain the appropriate crane operator's license for the type and capacity of cranes operated in this position.
  • This position is covered by the civilian drug abuse testing program in accordance with AR 600-85 and/or EP 600-1-3 based on performance of crane operation duties.
  • Must possess a valid State motor vehicle operator's license for the class of vehicle being operated based on site specific, job related requirements, and must maintain this license.
  • A medical examination is required. If selected, satisfactory completion of a medical examination is required before assignment to the position.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Operator, Derrickboat~ without more than normal supervision. To meet the screen out element, applicants should document experience and/or show the ability to perform common Operator, Derrickboat tasks including: operating various types of cranes using assorted levers, pedals, and controls; hoisting and handling heavy equipment and materials and working in tandem with other cranes; and acknowledging the appropriate weight limits and angles to lift loads safely. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress an upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work requires walking, bending, reaching, standing for prolonged periods, turning or moving hands, arms, feet and legs to direct or assist in operations on deck or below. Moderate physical effort is normally required in accomplishing tasks, lifting up to 50 pounds. Incumbent is subject to physical strain from swaying or jarring movements of the derrickboat.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed both inside and outside aboard floating plant in all types of weather. There is danger of drowning due to accident or storm (and particularly due to improper lifting or handling of heavy objects which may cause the derrick to overturn). There is further danger of injury due to blasting operations. Is subject to cuts, bruises, sprains, and broken bones. The possibility of falling or slipping on wet or icy decks, ladders, etc., is always present. Is exposed to dirt and grease when making repairs to vessel and machinery. Possibility of falling overboard or drowning since work is frequently performed on or adjacent to water, and occasionally in turbulent water. Works at heights over 50 feet.
