Summary

THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 32 EXCEPTED SERVICE BARGAINING UNIT POSITION.

This National Guard position is for a Powered Support Systems Mechanic, Position Description Number D2106000, and is part of the Montana Air National Guard, 219 Red Horse. (A copy of the Position Description can be obtained from HRO upon request.)

This position is open to: AREA I - Bargaining unit, permanent (Tenure 1 or 2) Title 32 technicians of the Montana Air National Guard (MT ANG), AREA II - Non-bargaining unit, permanent (Tenure 1 or 2) and Indefinite (Tenure 3) Title 32 technicians of the MTANG, AREA III - Current military members of the MTANG.

Duties

Responsible for the accurate interpretation of numerous manufacturer drawings, specifications, operating instructions, and test procedures, to troubleshoot, calibrate, align and repair a variety of highly complex pieces of powered support equipment. This includes identifying, repairing or replacing numerous electronic (both digital and analog) components. It also includes the repair of composite materials and state of the art gas compressor turbines and electronically controlled engines.

Troubleshoots repairs, adjusts and aligns down-sized powered support equipment. Uses a variety of test equipment, such as analyzers, digital meters, oscilloscopes, ground testers and other measuring devices to determine other repair and maintenance requirements.

Corrects unusual maintenance problems, by interpreting a variety of technical data such as tables, charts, formulas, color codes, wiring diagrams, and schematic symbols.

Analyzes circuits and circuit relationships, applies electronic principles in order to fault-isolate and repair the various digital devices contained in complex powered support equipment.

Performs inspections, preventive maintenance, servicing, repair, and adjustments on complex rotary diesel engines.

Conducts classes to train non-maintenance personnel in operations, test procedures, and troubleshooting requirements of complex powered support equipment.

Performs intermediate-level maintenance on powered support equipment and non powered Aerospace Ground Equipment (AGE). This includes working on cryogenic equipment, engine and generator changes, removing, repairing, and overhauling of accessories, and rebuilding of units. Engine rebuilding such as removal and replacement of crankshafts, pistons, and other integral parts. Replaces, checks and adjust valves, bearing, cams, clutches, bushing, springs, armatures, pushrods, exhaust manifolds, tubing, hose and defective wiring. Diagnoses gas turbine malfunctions, using visual and auditory senses, test equipment and applicable technical publications; makes repairs, removes, disassembles and assembles components and sub-systems.

Troubleshoots, repairs, overhauls, modifies and operates aerospace ground equipment such as Alternating and Direct Current (AC/DC) power generators, various types of internal combustion engines, air compressors, blowers, hydraulic test stands, cabin leakage testers, portable diesel engine driven generators, Emergency Airfield Lighting System (EALS), de icers, heaters, load banks, hydrostatic testers, cryogenic engines, decontamination units, thermal bath, vacuum pumps, flow meters, air conditioners and various pieces of non-powered AGE. Performs required Time Compliance Technical Orders (TCTOs) and other modifications as required on powered support equipment. Performs corrosion control duties such as inspection, cleaning, stripping, sanding, priming and painting of support equipment. Perform inspections, calibration and repair on test and shop equipment.

Performs maintenance data collection, and prepares other required forms. Maintains Technical Orders, Technical Order Files, commercial technical publications and other directives pertinent to the section. Submits Technical Order Improvement Reports, Material Deficiency Reports and suggestions when required.

Implements the Squadron Environmental Program and Air Force Occupational Safety and Health Program (AFOSH) within the electrical and power production sections.

Equipment custodian for electrical and power production sections.

Assists electrical and power production in the various phases of installation, troubleshooting, maintenance and repair.

Maintains proficiency for the installation, operation, repair, and maintenance of Aircraft Arresting Systems and EALS.

Performs other duties as assigned.

  • This is an excepted service position that requires membership in the employing state's National Guard.

GENERAL EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Must have experience or training which demonstrates the knowledge of mechanical maintenance work; ability to read and use technical manuals, illustrations, diagrams and schematics, and skill in the use of equipment and hand tools used in troubleshooting, testing, and repairing equipment.


SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Must have experience or training removing, adjusting, replacing, cleaning, and installing parts, components, and accessories. Experience which provided working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic theory applying to powered support equipment and systems; and skill to replace, fit, install, and make adjustments. Experience which provided working knowledge of the makeup and operation of the various individual systems maintained and their interrelationships. Experience reading and interpreting parts lists, manufactures' repair manuals, diagrams, and electrical schematics.
