In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5300 Industrial Equipment Maintenance Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of a POWERED SUPPORT SYSTEMS MECHANIC INSPECTOR without more than normal supervision.
JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of principles of electricity (AC/DC), solid-state circuitry, theory and operation of internal combustion turbine, diesel, and gasoline engines; theory and operation of heating, air conditioning, pneudraulic, pneumatic, and generator power system as well as the safety rules and practices for each. A minimum of type II certification for Federal 40CFR Part 82 Subpart F, Air conditioning repair and recovery of refrigerants is required.
2. Knowledge of regulations, procedures, and policies related to maintenance records and documentation requirements for the maintenance of systems as well as the ability to apply shop procedures, policies, written and oral instructions and directives sufficient to provide training to others.
3. Skill in reading, interpreting, and using wiring diagrams, schematic drawings, technical orders, technical publications, AFOSH standards, and similar guides.
4. Skill in using hand and power tools, instructions, test equipment, and electrical multimeters to include special tools such as digital test equipment (CO2, turbine engine, temperature controller), hydrostatic testers, load testers up to 100,000 lbs, hammers, drills, valve spring compressors and inside/outside micrometers with the ability to evaluate others in the process.
5. Ability in troubleshooting complex situations and making recommendations on process improvement possibilities for the powered support system procedures and maintenance processes.
6. Skill in installing, operating, inspecting, maintaining, repairing/modifying generators, automatic transfer switches, uninterruptible power systems; and in maintaining, overhauling, repairing, and reconditioning internal combustion engines, both diesel and gasoline, as well as turbine engines and the ability to inspect the work of others.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Performs work, which involves frequent bending stooping, reaching, crouching, standing and arm movement. Sometimes must work in awkward positions or cramped areas. Considerable standing, walking and climbing may be required. May lift and carry items weighing up to 40 pounds and lift heavier items using jacks, hoists, or helpers.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside and outside. Outside work may be performed in adverse weather. Some work is performed on the flightline and is subject to loud noise from jet engines.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
