This position is located in the Engineering Maintenance Department of the Thomas E. Creek VA Health Care System, Amarillo TX. The primary purpose of this position is to work as a journey level Painter or in a Maintenance Mechanic position which includes Painting work.

Duties
Major Duties:
- Reads and applies directions that relate to mixtures.
- Maintains proper records of time and material expended.
- Keeps materials orderly, safely secure, disposed properly per OSHA and MSDS standards.
- Applies coating techniques to ensure surfaces have a smooth textured and decorative appearance and meet thickness and level requirement.
- Ensures that the coating finish meetings match, texture, decorative, thickness and level requirements.
- Applies coating materials with any of the accepted trade devices.
- Determines methods, techniques, devices and materials that are best suited to the surface finish required.
- Prepares coating materials by tinting, toning, matching, blending and mixing in various additives.
- Applies basic shop mathematics to plan, measure and lay out materials according to dimensional requirements and specifications.
- Applies a general knowledge of wood, composite materials, wood substitutes and woodworking techniques.
- Measures, cuts, bends pipe and tile for repairs.
- Prepares surfaces by methods such as smoothing with pumice and rottenstone, filling, shaping and leveling with metal and synthetic resins, and mixing and applying pre-coating agents.
- Measures, cuts, constructs and installs, repairs and modifies wood, composite and wood substitute items where specific fit and accuracy are within allowable limits to produce a serviceable product.
- Applies standard measurements, specifications, and instructions when constructing, installing or repairing items such as frame structures, decking, partitions, shelving, doors, forms, siding and scaffolding.
- Hookup equipment to installed plumbing systems and replace pipe and tile.
- Other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements: The Journey level Painter prepares and coats surfaces from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms where the surfaces to be coated are cramped and may be hard to reach. The incumbent will be required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The incumbent may be required to lift carry and set up materials and equipment that weighs up to 10 pounds and occasionally handle materials and equipment weighing 40 pounds and over.
