Duties

You will serve as a Painter Blaster and be responsible for the preparation, by mechanical and chemical process, and the protective and cosmetic coating of buoys, vessels, structures, and miscellaneous objects.

Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include:

  • Preparing metal surfaces for coating by dry and wet abrasive blasting, by grinding with abrasive disks and wheels, and by chemical stripping methods.
  • Preparing metal surfaces by pickling or through controlled oxidation; prepares fiber reinforced plastic surfaces by filling, shaping, and abrasive sanding; prepares masonry surfaces by mechanical and abrasive blasting methods.
  • Developing coatings of proper color, adjusting hue, intensity and tone to match existing color schemes.
  • Developing coatings of proper texture, consistency, and thickness; diagnoses coating problems, and adjusts application or mixture to obtain desired results adjusting and operating air and airless spray apparatuses.

Selectee(s) for this position who are newly appointed to a permanent position are authorized to receive a one-time recruitment incentive of 15% of the salary, including locality for this position. Receipt of the bonus will require a 12-month service agreement. "Newly appointed" refers to the first appointment (regardless of tenure) as an employee of the Federal Government, an appointment following a break in service of at least 90 days from a previous appointment as an employee of the Federal Government, or, in certain cases, an appointment following a break in service of less than 90 days from a previous appointment as an employee of the Federal Government.

Relocation Incentive
Selectee(s) for this position who are current federal employees on permanent appointments and will be moving outside of the current commuting area of their current position to accept this position are authorized to receive a one-time relocation incentive of 15% of the salary including locality for this position. Receipt of the bonus will require a 12-month service agreement. The employee must establish a residence in the new geographic area prior to payment.

Student Loan - Selectee(s) for this position who are newly appointed to a permanent or term position may be eligible for student loan repayment up to $10,000 (pre-tax) for one calendar year. More than one loan may be repaid if the combined repayments do not exceed $10,000. Receipt of this incentive will require a three-year service agreement.

Qualifications

To qualify for the Electrician, WG-2805-10, applicants must meet the following screen-out job element to be considered for this position:

1. Ability to use this knowledge to set up, prepare, operate, regulate, and maintain complete stationary and portable sandblasting equipment safely such that the operation of equipment does not endanger the operator or other employees.
2. Knowledge of safety precautions and procedures necessary to ensure his and his fellow workers wellbeing.
3. Knowledge of sandblasting procedures and abrasives for large structures and objects, or small and intricate items of metal and nonmetal composition.
4. Ability to read and apply directions that relate to the mixture, use and applications of various kinds of coating materials, solvents and precoating agents, for example paint, varnish, epoxy, teflon, and paint remover, alkali, and phosphate compounds, pickling mixtures and anti-growth agents.
5. Skills in matching, tinting, toning and blending coating materials and in combining agents (for example catalysts, drying agents and retardants) with coating materials.

Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. Eligibility will be determined by the relevance, scope, and quality of all experience and training, regardless of where or how acquired. To meet the screen-out examples of the duties includes:

ADD REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES "Skill in troubleshooting and repairing equipment, in marine (maritime), industrial, institutional, or commercial settings, providing the full range of electrical support in the areas of installation, diagnosis, repairing of electrical wiring, pulling of wires, and all other preventative maintenance. Have repaired/troubleshoot/diagnosis marine (maritime) generators(genset) and Transformers."
