Summary

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

About the Position: MONCRIEF ARMY HEALTH CLINIC, DEPARTMENT OF PRIMARY CARE AMBULANCE SERVICE, FT. JACKSON, SC 29207

Duties

  • Prioritize treatments for patient having multiple problems and employ a variety of established emergency medicine techniques, methods and equipment to the appropriate medical facility.
  • As a paramedic, you will perform the following:
  • Respond both off- and on-site to all types of emergencies, and sometimes encounter situations that are life threatening.
  • Upon arrival at the scene, you will make an independent preliminary assessment as to the scene’s safety and the patient's status.
  • Conduct both a complete site survey for hazardous conditions and a physical examination of the patient in order to identify the nature, extent, and seriousness of the patient's condition.
  • Based on this preliminary assessment, you will make choices as to how best to provide stabilizing medical interventions prescribed in protocols and, if necessary, make modifications to these protocols within prescribed limits.
  • Perform pulmonary resuscitation if breathing fails to start spontaneously upon the opening of the airway, using such techniques as mouth-to-mouth, mouth to nose, etc.
  • Administer medications as needed, as well as recognize and determine the causes and basic medical implications of closed and open soft tissue wounds.
  • Exercise extreme care when examining, administering emergency care, and transporting the victim to prevent further discomfort, injury, or death.
  • Exercise control and direction over fire suppression personnel in the application of basic emergency medical procedures and treatment protocols.
  • Gather as much information as possible about the victim, the cause, and effects of the illness/injury in a short time in order to quickly initiate medical treatment.
  • Operate emergency vehicles in a variety of environmental and traffic conditions in emergency sites while independently taking into consideration traffic patterns, environmental factors, hospital location and status, and road conditions.

  • The incumbent is required to perform shift work and/or work on rotating shifts to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, and holidays and in other situations.
  • This position is designated essential during inclement weather or appropriate emergency conditions and the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work during inclement weather.
  • The incumbent for this position is required to obtain and maintain a valid government vehicle operation license.
  • In accordance with Army Regulation 40-68 all health care personnel assigned, or subject to reassignment, to duties involving the provision of patient care, will possess and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification of training.
  • EMT personnel will be accepted by the National Registry for Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT). These employees, who do not have the NREMT certification, will be given up to 1 year to obtain national certification.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Criminal history background check with childcare background checks required.
  • Less than 25% temporary duty travel MAY be required.
  • Physical required due to lifting up to 45 lbs. and work in confined spaces, high elevations, marine, toxic, and other dangerous environments.
  • This position requires wear of a uniform and personal protective equipment (PPE) as necessary.
  • This is a Testing Drug Position (TDP). You will be subject to initial/entry testing and random drug testing as a condition of employment.
  • Must possess a valid state driver's license.
  • A one-year probationary period may be required if not already completed in accordance with 5 CFR criteria.
  • All personnel who hold qualification or assignment in medical or dental career fields shall be required to complete a series of three immunizations against hepatitis B, or to show evidence of prior completion of three immunizations.
  • This position has a mandatory pertussis vaccination requirement. Applicants tentatively selected for appointment to this position will be required to sign a statement consenting to pertussis vaccinations.
  • This position requires immunization screening. Pertussis Vaccination is required for all positions with direct patient contact. You may be required to show proof of other immunizations.
  • This position has been designated a high-risk position for contracting and/or transmitting the influenza virus. Annual influenza vaccination is the most effective method for preventing influenza virus infections or transmitting influenza to others.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service which includes work that involves: 1) Responding on-site to accidents and other emergencies involving injury and illnesses and sometimes encounters situations which may be life threatening; 2) Recognizing and determining the causes and medical implication of various medical emergencies and illnesses; 3) recognizing when treatment of an injury or illness requires the administration of a pharmaceutical and selecting the correct medication for the appropriate treatment regime as outlined in protocols or by physician direction.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
