Summary

This position is assigned to the Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) Fitness, Sports, and Deployed Forces Support Branch; Fleet Readiness; Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC); Commander Navy Region Hawaii (CNRH). The incumbent serves as a pest controller and is responsible for specific beautification projects under the supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent.

Duties

Duties
  1. The incumbent directs and participates in control operation such as spraying, dusting, spreading, and other measures directed at prevention and elimination of pests. Applies chemicals such as solids, water, or other materials. Incumbent is responsible for the measuring, mixing and application of herbicides, fungicides, insecticides and pesticides on the 18-hole golf course, driving range and putting green. Application is made by mechanical means on the fairways, dispensation being done automatically from a motorized cart. On green, tee boxes and aprons, application is accomplished manually using a pressurized pumping spray attachment and visually gauging amounts of chemicals. On occasion, incumbent uses a hand-carried hand-pumped tank. The incumbent is responsible for accurate recording of spraying schedule and precise amounts of chemical used per government regulations in keeping within the confines of environmental dictated programs. Operates various types of gold course equipment such as green mowers, tractors, dump trucks and other grounds maintenance equipment. Keeps inventory of all safety materials required in pesticide handling. Keeps records of pesticide usage and maintains liaison with Safety Officer.
  2. Undertakes specific beautification projects at the verbal suggestion of the Golf Course Manager, i.e. potting plants, care of and permanent planting of the same. Also, potting of trees, shrubs flowers, and turf. Prepares ground area to insure successful transplanting of potted plants and turf. Operates tractor with post digger to break coral and other rock formations. Prepares correct mixture of soil, sand and micronutrients to promote vigorous plant growth. Supervises personnel assigned to help with beautification projects.
  3. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skill
Incumbent must be able to obtain the Department of Defense certification standards of pest control within one (1) year from date of employment. Must be able to interpret clearly specifications and sketches and have a good command of practical mathematics. Must be a qualified Motor Vehicle Operator with the ability to drive all trucks up to five tons including dump trucks, front-end loader and tractors. Must be able to lift 80 lbs. with assistance.

Responsibility
Incumbent works under the direct supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent. Assignments are received orally or in writing and the incumbent completes same independently. He follows prescribed schedules, work procedures, and safety practices which are in accordance with applicable environmental regulatory and safety requirements, and exercises care when adjusting equipment and mixing, applying, and disposing of pesticides. Work is subject to review for close adherence to legal requirements, environmental safety, and results achieved. When performing more complex or hazardous assignments such as fumigation or structural pest control, the incumbent at this level works closely with the supervisor.

Physical Effort
Position requires heavy lifting up to 80 lbs. pushing, pulling, stooping, and considerable physical strain. Work frequently requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions for extended periods.

Working Conditions
Incumbent works out of doors under hazardous conditions related to chemical usage for major portion of time. Is frequently exposed to inclement weather, heat and dust, requiring use of safety accouterments, i.e. boots, gloves, coveralls, hats and breathing respirators.
